Betrayed and left for dead, our hero is offered a lucky escape from a police convoy when the Callahan Bridge is blown up.

Cutscene
As the game starts, a Banshee speeds towards the Liberty City Bank.
After pulling up outside an alleyway, we see a man and a woman break out of the back door, pistols in hand.
The main protagonist chases the couple through the bank and is seen on CCTV exiting the back door, before blasting away the camera with a shotgun.
As he chases the two indviduals around the corner into the alleyway, he is confronted by the female who points two pistols at him, telling him "Sorry babe, I'm an ambitious girl, and you, you're just small time" before shooting him and leaving him for dead.
We can also see the dead body of the other man she was with on the floor nearby.
As the screen fades to red, a Liberty Tree newspaper article is displayed. We learn that our protagonist survived the shooting, but was arrested and found guilty of armed robbery, being handed a 10 year prison sentence.
The camera then cuts to a police van carrying a number of prisoners wearing orange jumpsuits and a couple of police officers as it makes its way from Staunton Island, through the dark and rainy skies, across the Callahan Bridge to Portland.
En route, a mysterious van is lurking in the distance, following the convoy.
As they reach the center point of the bridge, a bomb is tossed onto the road while a Patriot cuts in front of the convoy, stopping them in their tracks.
Armed men get out of the van and approach the police van, rescuing an old Oriental gentleman, leaving the protagonist and another man whose hands are bandaged to escape.
As they free themselves of the van, the camera zooms into the bomb in the middle of the bridge which explodes, taking out the majority of the road and destroying all of the vehicles on there.
The camera then pans across the destroyed bridge before closing in on the two escapees, standing near the burning wreckage of the police van.
Our buddy, 8-Ball, tells us there's a place on the edge of the Red Light District where we can lay low, but his hands are all messed up so we better drive.
Once on foot, the game will give a brief overview of the controls. We're told how to enter or exit a vehicle. The controls displayed will differ based on the platform you're playing on, but in our case on PlayStation, we can get in or out of a car with the Triangle button. The car, a Karuma, right in front of us is marked with a blue arrow.
Get into the car and we'll be told to accelerate by pressing the R2 button.
Follow the road down the bridge and the game will explain how the GPS and radar works, highlighting the route to the destination with a yellow line. You don't actually have to follow the specific route, it will adjust if you go off course. The actual destination is marked with a pink square on the radar.
You'll also be told you can hold L2 to brake, and if stopped, L2 will also be used to reverse a vehicle.
R1 can be used to apply the vehicle's handbrake, which is useful for quickly skidding around corners.
Warning!
You must use the Kuruma for the entirety of the mission. If you flip it over, blow it up or lose it in water, you'll fail the mission, which will automatically restart.
Make your way to the pink blip on the radar and when you arrive, you'll be told to stop in the blue marker - a glowing blue circle on the ground.
Cutscene
8-Ball and our protagonist, who is completely unnamed throughout the game, but is actually called "Claude", run into the hideout to change out of their orange jumpsuits.
The game then informs us that we can save the game at this safehouse when we're not on a mission. To do so, run into the doorway where the save menu will be displayed.
We're also told that we can store one car in the garage next door by parking it inside when saving the game. Parking vehicles in the garage and moving far enough away so the door closes will also fully repair the vehicle inside, which is useful to know for later in the game.
8-Ball and Claude are then seen running back towards the car with fresh clothes. Our protagonist Claude is now wearing a black leather jacket and khaki green cargo pants which he'll be wearing for the rest of the game.
Once back in the car, 8-Ball tells us he knows a guy called Luigi, based around the block in the Red Light District, who can probably get them some work. He wants you to drive them around.
Make your way around the corner then park up in the blue circle in front of Luigi's club.
Cutscene
Claude and 8-Ball exit the car and walk towards the alleyway, heading towards the service door at the back of Luigi's club.
This will end the game's introductory mission, however the next mission, Luigi's Girls, will start automatically.
Post-Mission
- Reward: None
- Mission Unlocked: Luigi's Girls (starts automatically)
- Although you can't save the game until you complete the following mission, the Portland Safehouse is now unlocked. You may use the garage to repair your vehicle if you need to, however.
