Grand Theft Auto IIIGTA III - Side Mission Guide

Vigilante

Published by Psy

Use a law enforcement vehicle to chase down and eliminate 60 criminal threats across the three islands in GTA 3's Liberty City.

To start the Vigilante missions, you'll need to acquire a law enforcement vehicle and press the D-Pad Up button. There are a variety of different vehicles which can be used for the Vigilante missions, but the most basic and easiest to acquire is the standard Police Car which will always spawn outside the Police Station on each island. You could also get in trouble with the law and steal one.

Vehicles you can use for the Vigilante missions include;

  • Police Car
  • Enforcer
  • FBI Car
  • Barracks OL
  • Rhino

The objective of the Vigilante missions is to drive across the city, chasing after vehicles marked with a blue arrow and ultimately kill the criminal inside. To do this, you'll need to crash into, or ideally shoot their car with a drive-by weapon. Once it takes enough damage, the car will usually stop and its driver will get out and try to flee on foot. They may occasionally steal another vehicle and attempt to escape again.

Unlike later games in the series, the Vigilante missions in GTA III only require you to kill one target at a time. There are no levels, just an unlimited number of singular targets who spawn in moving vehicles and drive around the map.

In order to complete the Vigilante missions in GTA 3, you must eliminate 20 criminals on each of the 3 islands, meaning 60 kills in total. They do not have to be consecutive, but you should keep a count of how many criminals you've killed on each island and the game doesn't display a breakdown of your Vigilante kills, only a running total, besides the current amount which is reset whenever the mission ends.

Successfully killing 20 criminals on each island can take anything from 20 minutes to an hour to complete, however there's no obligation to do all 20 kills at once.

After every 10 kills on an island, you'll receive a pager message telling you a new police bribe has been delivered to your safehouse.

Time Limits & Rules

The time will constantly count down, so you need to be as quick as you can to reach the target vehicle. You'll be given a decent chunk of time to complete each kill. Drive-by shooting is slightly tricky in GTA 3 so you may want to ensure you're well stocked up on Uzi ammo before starting the mission.

The worst thing about the Vigilante missions is that, despite the fact you're doing their job, the police really don't like you driving around the city spraying bullets everywhere and blowing up cars in a trail of destruction... You'll end up with a wanted level which is quite tricky to shake because you can't take the police car to the Pay 'n' Spray. Your only solution is to try to lose a single star wanted level by avoiding the police for awhile, or hunt down police bribes around the city - but they don't respawn very quickly.

One of the benefits to having the police chasing you is that you always have access to new law enforcement vehicles if yours gets too damaged, but they'll also slow you down and you risk potentially being arrested.

You are allowed to exit the police vehicle, unlike all of the other vehicle sub-missions, however you must get back inside within 60 seconds or the mission will end. This gives you time to get out and blast a car with a shotgun or rocket launcher as it goes past.

The mission will end if you exit the Police vehicle and don't get back in for 60 seconds.

You'll also fail the mission if you are Wasted, Busted or you run out of time.

Level Breakdown

Island Criminals Total Kills
Portland 20 20
Staunton Island 20 40
Shoreside Vale 20 60

Tips

Most of the law enforcement vehicles have decent speed and handling. The regular Police Car will always be quick enough to chase down the criminals, but you should definitely try to remember where you can find police bribes to help decrease the wanted level you'll inevitably receive. In extreme circumstances you could exit the police car, jump in a regular vehicle and drive it into the Pay 'n' Spray, then get back into the police car within 60 seconds, but this will be tricky to do depending on the level of law enforcement on your tail.

You'll want to stock up on ammo for your drive-by weapon before starting the mission. You'll need at least 1,000 rounds, but more would be safer.

You can get out of your vehicle for up to 60 seconds, so if you have an RPG or another powerful weapon you could wait on the road for criminal vehicles to approach and take them out without the need to drive-by, however enemy cars will often drive quite erratically and it's difficult to know where they're going to turn.

Rewards

  • Each time you complete 10 kills on an island, you'll unlock a police bribe at your safehouse. There are 2 bribes to unlock on each island, eventually giving you the ability to clear a 6-star wanted level by returning to your safehouse at any time.

You'll often find a police car outside the police station on each island. They may be locked, in which case you should drive away from the area and return to see if it respawns unlocked.

The Vigilante missions are a requirement towards 100% completion.
