Grand Theft Auto IIIGTA III - Side Mission Guide

Patriot Playground

Published by Psy

Patriot Playground

Use a Patriot to collect checkpoints around the cliffs at Portland Beach before the time runs out.

To start the Patriot Playground checkpoint challenge, you need to get into the parked Patriot outside the Supa Save, just South of Saint Mark's.

There are 15 blue ringed checkpoints which are scattered over the beach, hills and cliffs of Portland Beach and around Salvatore's mansion.

You can collect them in any order and the timer doesn't start until you drive through the first checkpoint, but as soon as you do, you'll have 20 seconds to reach the next one as your time counts down. Each additional checkpoint you collect will add a further 20 seconds to your timer and you must collect all 15 of them before your total time runs out. In total, you'll have 5 minutes (15 x 20 seconds) to beat the mission, but you must collect a checkpoint at least every 20 seconds to keep the timer alive.

You'll fail the challenge if you get out of the vehicle, destroy the Patriot or run out of time.

Tips

Hints & Tips
The Patriot has great handling and can stick to really steep and uneven ground, however it's much easier to complete this mission when it's sunny, or at least not raining. The weather can randomly change every in-game hour (60 seconds real time), so try to wait for clear weather before collecting your first checkpoint.

I always start with the checkpoint on the beach, next to the water and Portland Harbor. Turn around so you can slowly reverse (or roll back) into it - just make sure not to end up in the water. Then, you can accelerate towards the next checkpoint straight ahead as soon as the timer appears which will save you time and give you more of a buffer to take your time for the more challenging checkpoints.

Work your way through the checkpoints under the train tracks, and those on the hills and cliffs near Saint Marks, also collecting those on the beach too, but when you reach the steep path up the cliff right next to Salvatore's mansion (before you reach the rock arch), drive up to the mansion.

Collect the checkpoints around Salvatore's mansion and the one right down the cliff facing the lighthouse.

Next, carefully make your way down the Northern side of the cliffs, then grab the checkpoint under the arch.

By this point you should have plenty of time left to grab the dangerous checkpoint right by the water on some uneven ground.

As long as you manage to collect the final checkpoint before the time runs out, you'll complete the challenge, regardless of how much time you have remaining.

Hints & Tips
My number 1 tip for this mission is to go as fast as you can at the start to build up your time - try to get around 1 minute in reserve, then be very careful and drive very slowly around the more challenging checkpoints. If you lose your grip or roll the Patriot, you're probably going to end up in the water. You should only take risks if you're almost out of time.
