GTA VI Setting and Story

Published by TreeFitty
Last Updated by Psy

Grand Theft Auto VI heads to the state of Leonida, home to the neon-soaked streets of Vice City and beyond in the biggest, most immersive evolution of the Grand Theft Auto series yet.

The Story: Official Synopsis

"Vice City, USA."

Jason and Lucia have always known the deck is stacked against them. But when an easy score goes wrong, they find themselves on the darkest side of the sunniest place in America, in the middle of a criminal conspiracy stretching across the state of Leonida — forced to rely on each other more than ever if they want to make it out alive.

The Setting: Leonida State

"Only in Leonida"

When the sun fades and the neon glows, everyone has something to gain — and more to lose.

The main focus of the game will be a modern take on the GTA-rendition of Miami, named Vice City, however, we will be going far beyond city limits from suburban sprawl to swamplands. Many real-life municipalities have been sewn together to form the state of Leonida. Note many landmarks have been taken from other locations to fill in as needed by the developers.

GTA VI Landmarks
Grand Theft Auto VI draws inspiration from numerous real-life buildings and locations for its portrayal of Vice City and the state of Leonida. Explore a compilation of the real-world landmarks we've identified in the game so far.

Vice City

"Everything in Excess"

We're a long way from the '80s, but Vice City is still the sun and fun capital of America.

The glamour, hustle, and greed of America captured in a single city. Each neighborhood has something to offer, from the pastel art deco hotels and bright white sands of Ocean Beach, to the bustling panaderías of Little Cuba and the bootleg brands of the Tisha-Wocka flea market, out to the VC Port, the cruise ship capital of the world.

The urban area will encompass many surrounding municipalities intertwined with Miami.

Leonida Keys

"Gateway to Paradise"

The dress code is casual, the bars are loaded.

Life in this tropical archipelago isn’t flashy but it’s easy. Get your buzz on and pull up a deck chair but look out — you are right on the doorstep of some of the most beautiful and dangerous waters in all of America.

The Florida Keys are barrier islands that stretch along the southern coast out into the open water.

Grassrivers

"Welcome to the Wetlands"

The untamable jewel of Leonida's crown.

You never know what lies beneath the surface of this primordial expanse. The gators may be the most famous attraction, but there are far deadlier predators and weirder discoveries among the mangroves.

Based on the famous Florida Everglades, the Grassrivers is a large wetland home to many colorful and dangerous animals.

Port Gellhorn

"Live Hard"

This is Leonida's forgotten coast.

Cheap motels, shut-down attractions, and empty strip malls won’t bring the tourists back, but there’s a new economy in this once-popular vacation spot. It’s fueled by malt liquor, painkillers, and truck stop energy drinks. Jump on a dirt bike and hold onto your wallet.

Moving out west, beach getaways-turned-suburbia and old industrial towns line the coast.

Ambrosia

"Keeping Leonida Sweet"

The battle for the health and wealth of Leonida begins here.

In the heart of Leonida, American industry and old school values still reign supreme — whatever the cost. The Allied Crystal sugar refinery provides the jobs, while the local biker gang provides almost everything else.

Appears to be based on the areas around Florida's largest lake, Lake Okeechobee.

Mount Kalaga National Park

"Wild, Wild Country"

Room to breathe on the state's northern fringes.

A national landmark up against the state's northern border, Mount Kalaga offers prime hunting, fishing, and off-road trails. In the lush surrounding backwoods, hillbilly mystics and paranoid radicals live far from the prying eyes of the government.

This appears to be based on areas in the state of Georgia, which may explain why vehiclelicence plates featuring the state of "Gloriana" can be seen in Trailer 2.

Military Base

Although not confirmed yet, Florida hosts around 20 military bases from all branches. Many large tracks of land and even water are designated training grounds for US military use. There will likely be at least one military base similar to Fort Zancudo in GTA V that will house various military hardware and vehicles including jet fighters.

Tropical Islands?

The original leaks suggest the game was intended to be quite large emcompassing parts of Central or South America but was later reduced. Later gameplay leaks provided coordinates of the map and show it is very much offset to the northwest. This leaves plenty of space to the east and south for tropical islands based on the Bahamas or other countries.

GTA Online added Cayo Perico as a DLC heist in 2020. The island is said to be off the coast of Columbia but is a mashup of various locations. It is possible this was originally intended for GTA VI.

Story: Inspired By Bonnie and Clyde?

The game will revolve around two main characters, Jason and Lucia, who are small time criminals trying to make a quick buck by putting their skills together. Whether they meet before or during the story remains to be determined. It can be assumed there will be ups and downs for their relationship during the events of GTA VI.

The story will likely follow the pair moving up from small town robberies to multi-million dollar heists as they make new contacts - friends and enemies - throughout the game.
