Pleading insanity is a "get out of death free card". It works when you kill a small amount of people but the amount of people this guy killed would be an automatic death sentence over here. Realistically anyone who goes on a murder spree is insane anyway.
Two of the most experienced psychologists talked with Breivik for 36 hours, and they have access to all the interrogation files. Early during their 36 hour talks with Breivik they got a feeling of what his diagnose would be, and at the end of the talks they were absolutely sure of the diagnose (paranoid schizophrenic).
Breivik is not trying to fool anyone by acting insane, if he did I think the very experienced psychologists would see his bluff. Actually it is not in his interest to be declared insane, because that means he risks never being free again, though he might be free after a number of years.
If he is convicted as a (sane) criminal, he can get a maximum sentence of 21 years, and this is what Breivik wants
. And since one prison year = 9 months, 21 years equals 15,75 effective years.
Breivik was very offended by the diagnose and the psychologists were added to his death list. In his mind he is sane and a genius and the most perfect knight (amongst other things).
So he is not playing the "get out of trouble free card" by pleading insane, quite the opposite.
Now I think he should be in a high security asylum, not prison. How can anyone support putting insane people in normal prisons? Or to put them in a death row?
