Full Version: Admin validation for new accounts enabled

Due to the vast amount of spam we've been getting lately I've decided to tighten the boards security features a little bit. This means that new accounts need to first verify their email address, and then be verified by one of the admins through the control panel.

Any accounts that are awaiting validation at the time of this post have been deleted from the database.

If you're having any problems just drop any of us admins an email (our forum username @igrandtheftauto.com) with your username and registered email address and we'll look into it.

Also, just a quick thanks to everyone who has been reporting spam posts. It makes clearing up the mess much easier. Keep it up smile.gif

I'm always happy to snitch for my beloved forums. Happy to hear about account validation, though.
TreeFitty
Hooray!

And thanks to anyone who reported posts I may not have replied to. smile.gif

I was going to say something like that.

Good to see the spam stop. I almost feel sorry for the admins having to manually check every new member and spammer..
PabloHoneyOle
I say we tighten security a little more.

Keep out the hooligans.

I was also thinking about saying something... I had my fair share of snitching too.

Me too. I have reported so many spammers that I think my portrait hangs in a nice frame in the staff forum. Right, Fitty?

There's some spammers that validated or registered before the change so there may be a few more popping up over time. Just keep reporting them. smile.gif

I'm almost speechless. laugh.gif
I didn't think you guys would ever afford such splendid work of art in your staff room, when I said that it was only to tease. But some of you must have much deeper pockets than I thought. And good taste! I must say I'm really handsome in that portrait, it's enhanced and better than the original. I expect a phone call from Time and People Magazine any minute. smile.gif

Good work with implementing my self portrait in that picture. The cat or whatever it is that you added is awesome.

That's the staff forum? Weak.
TreeFitty
It is merely one of many rooms.
Massacre
Clearly you haven't seen the recent expansions Warlord Industries has made to the Gold Forum.

I've heard those book shelves revolve, dunno what's on the other side though.

How many spammers do you turn down every day?
TreeFitty
Duff has the statistics of new accounts. Not all of them get caught. It depends what the bot is programmed to do. Many pick random forums to post in but they can only do so in the validation forum so it comes down to luck with those. A lot of them seem like they need to edit their profile (put in spam links) before posting but they can't do that until they get validated. So a lot of spam accounts are just roaming the site not doing anything. smile.gif
demon
But every new account needs to be validated manually, isn't that what was said? What the bot is programmed to do shouldn't matter if you still perform manual validation of every account.

Validation forum? What you meant was validation period?

It's fun to see them trapped and not being able to do their thing. biggrin.gif
TreeFitty
I know what I said. There's a "newbie" forum you can't see.
DuffMan
Yeah, we have a super secret forum only validating members can see. Spammers post their spam there and real accounts can request to have their accounts validated. I think most spam bots recognise when admin validation is required though so there isn't too much crap posted in there, but anything in there is better than on the main boards.

Just to give you some idea of the scale we're talking about, here are registration stats for the last few weeks. Can you see when the spambots started arriving in big numbers? HINT: we currently have 2314 accounts awaiting validation.

Duff just said that every post in the validating forum surpasses the quality on the main board. Jumpy.gif
Well, that's how I choose to interpret it. XD.png

Anyone know if the spam attack is targeted against most forum sites or if we're just unlucky?
TreeFitty
I think a lot of IPB (and possibly other similar forums) got hit.
Marney1
Can you let CanadaVIAGRA through to the forums please?

Should have made friends with injutrutliani since that's what he/she was selling.
