Schwarzenegger said after signing Senate Bill 1449 that he does not support decriminalization of marijuana, but the law would save the state courts money.

"In this time of drastic budget cuts, prosecutors, defense attorneys, law enforcement and the courts cannot afford to expend limited resources prosecuting a crime that carries the same punishment as a traffic ticket," the governor said in a statement.

So it's only to save state courts money. Maybe they should disband the court system alltogether and save even more money. doh (12).gif

The new law is only for one ounce or less. How many grams is an ounce? Is one ounce enough for one joint?

The fine ought to be much more than $ 100, maybe 500 or 1000. sleep.gif

why should we pay a bigger fine for smoking pot just because you dont like it?? and how can you be against something you know nothing about?? also it would be stupid to disband the courts altogether, whats the point of that? should be legal with no penalty at all.

28 grams to an ounce.

No, an ounce is about 27.5 grams too heavy for a normal joint.

Typical that they reduce the fine after I move out of California.

Now it's going to be a lot better for young people. Under an oz is like a ticket, only.

Hopefully California will become the first state to completely legalize, but probably not any time soon.

Still, it is a small victory for a harmless substance.

I mean you can make a blunt with an ounce of weed if you're a fan of Cheech & Chong. But the layman usually uses 2.5 grams for a blunt. Demon has a point, though. Speeding tickets are way more expensive than $100.00, so the the price should be upped.

Thanks §ynch for the info on ounces. I don't believe it's right to legalize it, but I don't live in California so they can decide whatever they want. What about a compromise; legalize pot but make a mandatory death penalty for selling or using harder drugs (no joke). Drug addicts commits so much crime that it would be a good riddance.

Actually, I don't give a hoot if it's legalized or if people are harshly penalized for it, because at the end of the day the majority of frequenters of marijuana turn out to be wastes of life. But if the government of California wants to make possession equal to a speeding offense, they should at least raise the cost; even fines for littering are around $400.00.

Weed is a non-addictive, mellow scene.

Crimes committed for need of money are usually based on hard drug addiction.
This is such as coke, crack, the various speeds, or heroin, definitely not weed.
Real drug sales are a business, and a violent one. Weed sales are a mellow one.

There is rarely crimes committed for a mellow scene for weed.

I think it should be legalized, globally. If any of you have ever visited Amsterdam,
it is a very cool experience to witness. House wives roll up with their strollers,
cop their buzz, and go on about their day, shopping and such. With their babies.
It is a normal, regular, routine. It is not just stoner dudes. It is everyone.
Getting on with their day.

There is nothing wrong with the herb. It is always 4:20, somewhere......

I am not concerned with laws, busting addicts of crack, cops, or any of that negative scene man.

I just think weed should be legal, globally.

Not just Medical Marijuana, but marijuana in general.

There is nothing wrong with it. It is not a big deal.
Passive, mellow, innocent.

Try to stay on topic guys. Else this is asylum bound. sleep.gif

and "decriminalized" would mean it's legal, not they reduced the offense.

Hunger and drowsiness. Loss of long-term memory and low sperm count are also potential effects, but by the time memory loss sets in you'll be old enough to forget everything anyway, and low sperm count is actually a plus because children are an abomination.

That's why I want capital punishment for hard drug crimes, not for pot. Don't get me wrong, I'm not fanatically against pot, I just don't see how legalizing it is justified. Make it legal for medical use only (it might be legal for medical use somewhere, but not here.)

Edit:
@Fitty,
are we not on topic? How can we discuss decriminalizing without discussing the substance in question?
TreeFitty
Someone had their panties in a bunch over off-topic posts. So here I am.
DonkeyTits
It's still a federal crime, so technically a DEA agent could still bust ya.
Massacre
They go after dispensaries all the time, but they won't bother a customer.

If we get outright legalization in Cali, they'll probably separate it from the U.S. and let it drift out to sea, then Kurt Russel will have to go there and do some stuff that I don't know about because I had to go shit part of the way through the movie.
bOnEs
topic is too long; i didn't read all of it... in other words, tl;dr...

the headline caught my attention though... while it may be decriminalized, it's still illegal to sell and distribute... which doesn't effect me at all since i am a buyer and one who would be issued a citation for carrying some... but the BIGGER news in all of this is, california got the ball rolling on the subject... they have been at the forefront of this issue for a couple years now and the fact that it's been decriminalized means the rest of the states may consider similar actions, especially if this in some way helps the california economy, the sole reason why ahhhhloooohhhllld pushed for it's decriminalization in the first place...

this is a HUGE step for the legalization of marijuana and quite frankly, a smart one... how much longer will this country continue to ignore the fact that everyone does it, it's not as bad as your teacher said it was, and it's something else the government can tax the hell out of?? by today's standards, marijuana isn't even close to the power it used to be... kids are taking all kinds of really bad man-made abominations out there... weed has been, and will forever be, a plant from god's green earth... not broken down and run through chemical baths and stuffed with a 1,000 different poisons...

it has one chemical... and that's THC...
Massacre
But if we get outright legalization, to the point where it's sold like alcohol or cigarettes, I fully expect it to wind up being pumped full of chemicals like they do with tobacco.
bOnEs
but if it's legal, i'll just grow my own... or know friends that grow their own and just get some homegrown stuff... that is, if growing is considered legal, which they might not let you do unless your a licensed pot grower... but that would be just bullshit politics anyways and everyone would probably fight it...

There are more highway deaths due to alcohol than you can imagine.
More rapes, more spousal abuse or murders, more over doses. More stupidity.
Alcohol is addictive, there are people called alcoholics. It is real.

I recently saw Lewis Black perform live, and he was hilarious, they guy always is.

When it came to wanting his generation to being remembered for something,
he stated that it should be the legalization of weed. Something real. (He is 62)

After all, after a show, which car would you rather get in to drive you home:

1) The car with the driver who had been drinking.

or

2) The car with the driver who had been smoking.

Exactly. No one is going to get in the car with the driver who has been drinking.

There are no statistics for the number of weed users who have gone insane.
There are graveyards full of people who have killed themselves or others on alcohol.

Massacre
That was my point, yeah. I don't know where he's getting this shit from.
Fido 15
I personally drink while being inebriated all the time, as do many others. The ones who die in highways are just lightweights going on joyrides. Every substance can be used responsibly, it's just up to the individual. Driving while being stoned is more difficult though from personal experience; that's why most marijuana users just smoke in a comfortable setting away from major activity.
demon

But I can say this: I would not let a drunk nor a high driver drive me home.

It was a crucial point, because I said that alcohol is worse. §ynch made a point by saying that alcohol intoxication is worse (and you supported him), but I had already said the same. But I guess I wasn't clear enough about it.

I don't have any proof ready to show you, but I've read and heard about people going crazy while stoned and I think it's more credible than your post.
