I was just about to make this thread - thought you had gotten lazy.

Well, I officially have a reason to postpone my impending suicide through Christmas.

Trailer looks awesome, from the flag shown in the trailer, it looks like New California Republic is involved. Perhaps this one will go back to the factions in Fallout 2, which was set on the West Coast.

QUOTE
Fallout New Vegas was announced by Bethesda last year. The game is being developed by Obsidian Entertainment, a studio comprised of many developers who worked on earlier Fallout games...

Fallout: New Vegas is not being made by Bethesda's in-house team, led by designer Todd Howard. That group, which has worked on one big game at a time, from Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion in 2006 to Fallout 3 in 2008 appeared to be on an every-other-year pace for game releases.

http://kotaku.com/5464157/fallout-new-vega...or-fall-release

Kind of disheartening news. I thought Bethesda did a fantastic job with Fallout 3. I hope New Vegas isn't a step in the wrong direction.

bOnEs
yea, me too... i think they are using the fallout 3 build but, tweaking the leveling system and perks... i just hope it doesn't feel like a different game... and i don't think bethesda would allow them to change the formula from something that was proven to be a great success...
PabloHoneyOle
That's what I'm thinking too. Very excited for this.

i might need to brush up a little on my fallout history because, i recall hearing about the new california republic... i might head to the fallout wikia site and do some story research on the first few fallouts because, didn't they all take place on the west coast? there is probably going to be a lot references to the older games throughout the new one...

Better hurry up and finish the Fallout 3 expansions. This game looks awesome.

The first one was in California, I think the second one was more of the entire West Coast. Here's a map from the site.

I'm not going to bother with Fallout 3 now because I've got a busy time ahead of me with EFLC and RDR and this will be out by the time I'm bored with those.

You won't appreciate New Vegas without playing Fallout 3. Truth.
Heartless
Am I the only one who feels like this may be moving in the wrong direction? More features are good, sure, but Fallout has always been about story.
bOnEs
well, we haven't even heard of what the story will consist of yet... speculation right now seems to revolve around the NCR and BoS... i guess from what i am gathering, the NCR are going to be the equivalent of the enclave from fallout 3?? anyways, speculation on the story seems to be that the NCR is either trying to get a hold of new vegas for themselves, or trying to keep new vegas as their territory...

the guy at the end of the video has a pipboy so, maybe you have to join the NCR or something... we'll know more in a couple of weeks...
Ex-PS Fanboy
I don't even have Fallout 3. And tbh I'm not sure if I want to get it. I don't like Fallout that much, there I said it...
Heartless
Well, 3 didn't have anywhere near the deep level of immersion that 1 and 2 had. (I just nuked megaton, why the hell am I still chasing dad? etc)

It'll still be a fun game, to be sure, no matter what comes out.
Ex-PS Fanboy
Vegas does sound tempting though...

Pretty good analysis of the trailer over at Kotaku.

About the scary cowboy dude. Fallout isn't going to replace their Pip-Boy guy anytime soon, right?

edit - that's Richard Rodgers - blue moon, if I'm not mistaken. A copy of it doesn't exist online, yet, so I can't confirm.
bOnEs
nah, i think he's just an advertisement... but, that red glow seems to be the most interesting aspect of that trailer for me... what the hell is that? i mean, i can clearly see he's wearing some sort of gas mask but, where does the red glow come from?

here's a bigger, higher quality trailer video straight from the source... as well as the current write-up...

With that version, you can also see the same red glow cast on the ground.

You are both faggots.

Anyone else slightly unsettled by the fact that it looks more like a modern version of Fallout 1 + 2's graphics than Fallout 3's? A little more cartoony? I mean, of course I'll play it anyway, but...
Heartless
I was going to say that robot looks more like something from Borderlands.
Massacre
Was there something like it in the other Fallout games? It obviously wasn't in Fallout 3, but I've never played the others. Might have to pick up the Fallout Trilogy this weekend...
Heartless
Most of the Robots from the first three games all adhered to the concepts of 50s' thinking.

Even in 3 they looked more like Lost in Space.

That wheely looking thing is the first new robot, I think.
Massacre
I'll need to check again later. I'm not able to watch the trailer at the moment.

the trailer was CGI video... i mean, the graphics aren't going to look that good laugh.gif, or quite like that i don't think... but, that robot sure looked different... it kind of reminds me of some sort of scavenger robot... to me, it looks like he's sifting through sand, looking for something... the body just happens to be there... in a damn cemetery...

the guy at the end though, with "A7" on the back of his jacket, and a 7 on the helmet... what's that all about??

and seeing the vegas skyline all lit up sure gave off that sense of more modernization than the capitol wasteland... from what i read about people talking at the bethesda forums, there's mention of vegas in the older fallout games... and it's mentioned as being some city that's fully functional... totally rebuilt... so, there's going to be some interesting changes to the game by actually running into fully lit up city streets with people or creatures... but, i'm sure there's going to be plenty of other things out there in the vast mojave wasteland...

wait till synch see this shit!! biggrin.gif...

EDIT: here's IGN's "rewind" video... they make an interesting remark about the cowboy that sounds quite plausible, heartless... he could end up being the new pipboy icon for new vegas... he does flash from evil to good in the video...

http://xbox360.ign.com/dor/objects/1434197...spc_020410.html

they made no mention of the red glow though dry.gif...

IF the cowboy is the new pip-boy character, then those two images represent opposite sides of the Karma wheel.

Remember, Vault 8 is Vault City. Ergo, that guy is pretty much 99.9% from Vault 7. (Even more so because it has never been mentioned, despite 6 and 8 being developed thoroughly) Remember that Vault 13 was the basis of Fallout 1; it'll be interesting to return and see what's come of the old haunts. I think that New Vegas will be a face lifted version of the original game.

Further, that is the first new robot since the original. Fact.

I'm totally off my fucking head right here, but what if that red glow is coming from Kaibab National Forest?

PabloHoneyOle
Fallout 3 takes place at a different time than the first few Fallout games, a hundred plus years later (First game was 2161 , Fallout 3 was 2277). Ah Heartless mentioned, there will probably be the opportunity to revisit old stomping grounds from the first two games, although there is no mention WHEN New Vegas is set in... there could be vast improvements, with plenty of references to the past games.

I think I'll be picking up Fallout 1 & 2 soon too.

I'm also for the cowboy over the Vault Boy, but I'm pretty sure Vault Boy was in the first two games as well. I don't see how they could omit him and keep it canon. If Vault-Tec is involved, Vault Boy should be there.

Addedum: Looking over the Fallout wiki:
QUOTE
Behind the scenes
Original Vault Boy concept art

The character was originally designed by Leonard Boyarsky, based partly on Uncle Moneybags from the Monopoly board game[4], and then drawn for Fallout by George Almond for the first few cards and then by Tramell Ray Isaac, who finalized the look of the character as we know him today. Brian Menze is responsible for all new Vault Boy images in Fallout 2 and Fallout: New Vegas. The Fallout 3 images of Vault Boy were drawn by Natalia Smirnova.

Well, if the leak can be trusted, which it can't, then the game should start pretty shortly after the war. Which would incidentally put it at the same time as the first game.

What leak?
bOnEs
that leak probably can't be trusted but, that link also mentions that he emerges from the cave after a long period of time... and my guess would have to be at least 200 years... maybe he was trapped in there when the bombs fell, and after an explosion opened the cave again, he emerged some 200 years after the fact... who knows...

well, with the rumors of you being able to choose from like 6 different background stories, i am sure the vault boy makes his appearance on the vault-dwellers pipboy... for all others, the cowboy is probably considered to be the mojave wasteland mascot...

i like the idea of stomping around in the old settlements... but, i don't know if i have the time or if i feel like playing fallout 1, 2, and tactics, just to know the stories of the settlements... but, i did do some reading... here's what i've discovered so far...

i read that vault 13 needed a new water chip and you were tasked with finding a new one from vault 15... and there was a town founded in between the two, shady sands or something... once you get the chip and fight the super mutant leader, you take the chip back home and save the vault... but, they kick you out anyways due to high exposure to the elements... you venture off and start your own town called, navarro??...

in fallout 2, you play as the chosen one... a descendant from the original vault 13 savior... but, i haven't researched this story much yet... i'm off to do that here shortly...

haven't bothered looking up tactics yet but, i did do a little research on the new california republic... wasn't it originally started by deserters of vault 13 and 15 looking to start democracy all over again?
PabloHoneyOle
AH yes, I read that awhile back. Seems like more of an eager fan than anything of value. I suppose if you have an internet site and a good ability to write, you can make people believe anything.

I can wait for CONCRETE details from the developer. Everything else is Fancy Lad Snack Cakes to me.

All of it sounds fine and dandy save this:

You don't play a Vault Dweller (or descendant of one) but a courier, left for dead and saved by a friendly robot.

Being a Vault Dweller is possibly the only thing that made the games standout among the RPG-FPS market. Even if you don't agree with that statement, it's still a hallmark of the game and should be retained. I like the Vault concept because my brain more readily immerses itself in the story. As opposed to games like GTA where I have to wade into the feeling of being a cold blooded monster. Well, maybe not GTA, but you should follow well enough.
OptimumPx
Personally, given the Fallout world's obsession with robots doing menial tasks, I think the robot is a dealer from one of the pre-war casinos and the cowboy was the logo for the casino.

Mostly because it looked, to me at least, like the robot was moving those rocks around like they were chips at a table, and the fact that the smiling version of the cowboy's face looked a lot like the neon cowboy (Vegas Vic) from the old 1940's Pioneer Club casino on Fremont Street. smile.gif

-EDIT-
Look at this 1948 postcard with a drawing of Vegas Vic, looks almost identical. They copied it! Those copiers! mad.gif .....smile.gif

I am of course looking forward to this game, but I sincerely hope Obsidian don't do to it what they did to KoToR II.

Don't know if I believe any of those details anyway, but if Vegas is supposed to be largely intact, it kind of makes sense that you don't start off in a vault this time around.

The guy at the end of the trailer reminds me of the Helgast from Killzone for some reason... I'll end up playing this game, but i dunno if I'll have the money when it's released. I guess I'll just have to wait and see.

i like the sound of the story, and the changes that obsidian made... and i like the reference one of the designers made... he said, new vegas is like vice city... it's taking the original mold from fallout 3 and making it better, in the same way that vice city took GTAIII and made it better...

there's lots to like from that article for a fallout 3 fan... and there seems to be a lot to like for the older fallout fans as well...
