Rockstar originally announced the iPhone/iPod Touch version of GTA Chinatown Wars last year, but following the PSP release, no further information was released about the iPhone version leading many of us to wonder what had happened to it.

While I was totally randomly searching for stuff on the iTunes store, I searched for Rockstar Games and found Chinatown Wars for iPhone available from today, Jan 18th, 2010.

Rockstar haven't officially announced this yet as far as I know, and there are no reviews yet for the app, so I presume it's only JUST gone live.

So any of you with iPhones may want to grab it for £5.99 (it's only available in your country after midnight on Jan 18th, so if it's not there yet, you'll have to wait!)
The game is also availble in the U.S for $9.99, UK for £5.99, Europe for €7,99

First impressions:

Control scheme takes quite a bit of getting used to. There's an on-screen analog stick that you've got to move in whatever direction you wish to travel on foot. That's kind of complicated and your thumb takes up like quarter of the screen but after awhile I'd kind of got used to it. When driving there's different buttons that appear and the steering is pretty hard. There are two different buttons, one for left and one for right and it's just awkward trying to keep your fingers out of the way while you're driving at speed.

Definitely takes a bit of getting used to. Personally I think using the accelerometer would have been a better way of moving, but I guess eventually I'll get the hang of it. Not good for your screen though, smearing fingerprints all over it while running around.

Graphics are awesome, looks just like the DS version and loading times are pretty short indeed.

Can't complain for £6 though (presumably that's $10). Just the controls is the main issue but there's not really many other things they could have done I suppose.

Screenshots.

I'm gonna get it later this week for my iPod touch. smile.gif
What are your thoughts?

Bout fucking time.
ThomasH
True, it took to long. smile.gif

Some other user-made screenshots and a screen of the custom soundtrack option.

I downloaded it yesterday. It's pretty good, on-foot controls are hard to use though...

Really? smile.gif

The steering is a lot harder imo, I'm getting used to it day by day, but on foot is no problem.
What version iPhone/ iPod touch do you have? And does the game have any sorts of frame-drop?
Ex-PS Fanboy
Exact opposite for me. I have a iPhone 3G

Yeah true I see that happen a lot, do you drive with the `Anlog´ or the 2 arrows? smile.gif

Arrows, I didn't know there was analog driving...

Yeah, it works better, imo it's a lot more flexible.

Which of the GTA: Chinatown Wars-versions is the better? PSP or iPhone / iPod or is there any differences besides the lower price?
Ex-PS Fanboy
I tried analog driving, I still find arrows easier. Anyway, I'm stuck on the final mission. I get past the boat part but I can't catch kenny when he gets in the car.

I bought this game a while back, but i find the controls extremely difficult. Maybe I'm just slow...
The lack of a REAL joystick under the thumb is something i don't find positive; I don't know when I'm off the screen with my thumb (when he's not moving anymore, duh!)...
