i'd rather sit on the couch than at a desk to be honest... graphics aren't enough for me to plop down $2,000 to sit at a desk to play games... i'd rather sit on the comfy couch with my surround sounds system, and my HDTV, and play some games...

-------------------------------------------

so, i gave this demo a whirl and i am not all that impressed... here's my thoughts...

the camera is a bit of a pain to maneuver around... getting in and out of cars is a slow process... dying from a car crash is really dumb... getting shot at once or twice is enough to force you to stay back in cover for like 5 seconds until your health comes back... then you lean out and die instantly by a shotgun blast mad.gif... moving in and out of cover is a little jerky... what the fuck is the speed limit suppose to be? i kept getting pulled over because of this... yay, i can turn on faucets and open windows but, i can't figure out the point in all that... the cars handle, umm, strangly... it's way too easy to lose control of these big clunky beasts from the 50's... tapping the handbrake causes you to do donuts at 40 MPH, which isn't possible...

i opened the fridge and drank all the beers and got a cool blurred screen effect that lasted for a while, probably the highlight of the demo... i got a ped arrested by the police by starting a fight, then getting him to chase me until i passed a cop.. it's the old GTAIV trick... the destructive environment might be the most destructive one in a sandbox game ever... but, not everything is destructible... i killed myself by hitting small trees and small fences at fast speeds, which again, is very very annoying... it's cool that when your car dies, you can repair it and get her driving again... i did this like 6 times on one car, which is a nice touch... the shooting aspects have a nice touch but, something tells me this game is going to be extremely frustrating in the latter levels due to the insanely low amount of health you have...

overall, i am not in a rush to play this... we'll see what the reviews say but, i predict around 8's... nothing special but, it will probably have it's moments... i am not really sure what they have in store for side-missions but, it could sure use some... this city will get pretty boring real fast if there isn't much to do... the character models are really sharp though... very life-like and almost like heavy rain in the facial details... but the environment looks kind of rough at times, and the map looks very small compared to liberty city...

we'll see what the general consensus is though... i think a lot of people anticipating this game will feel a little disappointed...

There is a speed limiter so you dont go over. It keeps you at 40, so I guess thats it.

Thank you for pointing out other stuff, I mean I don't mind dying from a car wreck, its kinda cool.
AND IM IN LOVE WITH THE SOUNDTRACK.

You know, I was on break at work and I was texting my buddy about the demo and the more I texted him the more I realized I think I want this game.

where do you get the tommy gun from ?

The guys you have to flank have them. You can pick them up when you kill them.
DuPz0r
Ok i started playing it. I loved the music, reminded me of Stand By Me lol. But i got to Misery Lane and i was shooting my way in the building and it crashed after an explosion. I had to hard reset.

I reloaded it. Had a little run about. Went to the gun store bought me a shotgun and loads of ammo. i noticed a shop with a hat icon but didnt stop to see. i'm guessing that was an outfitter. I had to bribe a cop with $200 because i was carrying a shotgun around the streets!

I was driving at full speed and went to handbrake round a corner gtaIII style, and the side of my car swung straight into the front of a moving bus. My character was near death... i like the fact you have to drive a little safer than usual, i dunno why though.

I like the little assets like prono mags, i never knew what early 1900's porn looked like until now XD.png

I think this game is pretty awesome tbh! I'm buying it for sure.

I'm a little disappointed with the polishing of graphics. I don't think they'll be much better on release. That's something the PC version will have an upper hand on.
I thought they'd at least include some sort of bloom effect to hide those very aliased hard edges.

Other than the graphics issues. I think this will be a AAA title.

JamieMilne
i got the demo in uk with plus, but i signed up for usa store and wow it has a lot more stuff than uk, i dont understand why they cant give us all that stuff lol.
DuPz0r
I know, the US PS Plus always looks much better than ours. We are a smaller nation and net them less revenue, so we get the bargain bin rather than the decent title sales. That's one of the reasons i haven't gone for Plus yet.
JamieMilne
does it matter what us address i registered with, there not going to hunt me down are they lol ?
TwoFacedTanner
Hey Dup you were worried about polish on the graphics. Just a wee reminder...that was tthe demo they showed the mags months and months ago, so it probably looks better now.

True. But i thought they would have had a more up-to-date looking version for this demo. Which makes me think that they havent polished it that much on ps3... I don't really care to be honest, it isn't that bad. I prefer the way it plays rather than the way it looks.
PabloHoneyOle
Shit, I didn't realize the demo was out. I'm downloading it, but I'm weary about playing it. I need to beat Godfather 2 before I dive into another sandbox gangster game.

you know, i am tempted to re-purchase godfather 2... it's under $10 used on amazon... i've been wanting to create another don and build my empire from the ground up again biggrin.gif... it has fun, arcadish controls and shootouts... and i miss it sad.gif...

I did consider buying Godfather 2 at one time, I think it was after the fun of GTA IV had worn off, but it didn't seem to get good reviews.
bOnEs
it's like the saboteur... you have to look past the reviews, or just gather what you want from them... it's fun but, it's not the greatest game ever made... but, it'll keep you entertained... but, if your about to buy mafia II then, you might as well just pass on this until a later date... buy this later this year when your bored and looking for something else to play...

Oh yeah I wasn't going to bother getting it now, I resisted that urge to buy on an impulse, but since i've started buying online i've become rather reckless.
DuPz0r
I had the Godfather 2. i liked it. But i think this will be better. biggrin.gif
Pieface
Thought the Demo was a bit meh to be honest. Not a game I'd pay RRP on at all
bOnEs
yea i agree... for me, it's a game i'll dip into later on... maybe a rental, or maybe for $30... i still have just cause 2 ahead of it though for sandbox games that i need to play... like stoic, i got priorities and prior purchases to play, like dragon age right now... and renting naughty bear in i'm guessing a few weeks...
DuPz0r
I went back and played the demo for a second time just to see what the other icons were on the map. I first went to the clothing shop and bought a nice gangster suit with hat. I then went to the Mod shop and personalized my plates and changed the paintwork/bumpers/wheels. And then i went to the diner just outside of Misery Lane and drunk about 20 bottles of beer before starting the mission. The character was fucked by the time i got in to the brewery. He was staggering slightly (no where near as bad as IV) and the screen was blurring in and out of focus like mad!

I wish I had money like you guys to have so many games that I haven't played them all yet. sad.gif
bOnEs
i don't have the money... i only buy new games every once in a while... i'll buy older games though at a discount... fuck, i own my own place so, i don't really have any money to spend...
PabloHoneyOle
I played the demo briefly yesterday. I'll get this when it drops to $40 or so. Just don't have the time to play it.

I find it funny that it's a story-driven game and doesn't really focus on the free roam, yet you have more customisation than GTA IV, should prove interesting.
DuPz0r
It's true. But anyone can add more content into a sandbox than GTAIV had... lol. Hopefully R* take note of that when making the next full GTA title.

I just put the demo on to sit in the house and listen to the radio while i check the forums, I love these classic songs!

I wonder wonder wonder...DOoo oo ooo... Who wrote the book of love.
bOnEs
the songs were one of the highlights of playing the saboteur... stoic, marney and pie could back up those claims... there's just something about the music from the 40's and 50's... it's very... nostalgic... even the godfather 2 had a little of it...
DuPz0r
Gametrailers did a preview if anyone's interested.

There is a great atmosphere to this game and I'm excited about playing it - just not right now.

I usually lose that initial excitement if I don't buy it at the time.

Dupzor. Are you playing on the PC? If so here's a guide to remove the timer.

Sweet. I've not played it on my PC yet. But with the massive graphical difference, i might not go back to PS3 if start playing on PC!

yea, it really does have a nice gritty feel to it... it feels raw and unpredictable... the best traits of any sandbox game biggrin.gif... but will the gameplay pay off?? i'll be reading reviews to see what everyone thinks, as well as bits of this topic... i don't want to get spoiled...
DuPz0r
So, it's out tomorrow in the US (24th) and here in the UK 3 days later!

I hope i can afford it, what with me having to move house. Gonna have to ask the misses if it's alright. XD.png

If not, then i'll rent it and see if i really like it and buy it afterwards when i can afford it.
PabloHoneyOle
Fuck. It comes out tomorrow and I am terribly tempted to purchase it. I probably won't, but I could.

Maybe I'll go to Blockbuster at lunch and see if I can rent a copy.
bOnEs
it's getting the kind of reviews i thought it would get... 7's and 8's... 3/5's... meaning, i think i won't tear my hair out for passing on it right now... no rush... as a matter of fact, stoic reminded me that i need to rent naughty bear soon... this game can wait a while longer...
DuPz0r
You can't rely on reviews to help you decide on what game to buy these days... Shit games get good ratings because they're "better than expect", and decent, really polished games get bad ratings because they're "not enough" compared to a similar game, or compared to the hype.
GTAIV is a good example of a game that got over-hyped, 9/10's and 10/10's, but turned out to have so much less content than previous GTA games.

I normally make a decision based on pictures and trailers. Yeah i know trailers are designed to draw you in, and make you want it, but i can normally tell a good game from a bad one from pics and trailers. I guess it's the long term experience of buying decent and fail games...

Anyway, back on subject. I think Mafia 2 will have a really gripping story, but i think the fillers, like side missions and all will be lacking in enjoyment, or will get boring quickly. Which is fine if you're like me and really enjoy gritty gangster flicks and games. Because this game IS about the main story.

The only reason i think the side missions will be boring is because it's all been done before in GTA and is already old. i can't see them doing anything too different to GTA which will make me want to do it over and over again.
bOnEs
i was basing my decision on the demo... i predicted these scores from the demo alone... i am not saying it isn't any good but, the reviews just furthered my belief in how i saw the game myself... and that was a fun mafia story with little in-between...

i still plan on playing it one day though because, i too enjoy a good mafia story biggrin.gif...
DuPz0r
Ah right. Yeah i didn't think that much of the demo after a couple of plays. But that's because it's pretty small and repeatative. I'm sure the full game will be far more satisfying.
bOnEs
i just read some reviews and i will read some more later tonight when i get home and can actually read the IGN's, the joystick's, the destructoid's and such... but, i keep getting the same vibe and that's a "gorgeous" empty sandbox game with a decent story... driving and shooting mechanics that work but, will frustrate the hell out of you in other places... you can buy food and fill up your car with gas but, what's the purpose to all of that? nothing... you can buy suits and guns but, they're more of essentials on your way to missions rather than something to do when messing around...

the game seems to really push you into missions... every chapter starts out with you doing a mission and the environment never changes until that said chapter is complete... if the chapter starts out with rain in the afternoon, it will continue to rain without a sunset until your done... most missions are initiate from phone calls... and there's nothing to encourage you to explore the city... trying to find 50 playboy magazines just isn't enough to keep you exploring... there's no hidden weapons...

and that's what i've gathered so far... i'll read more into later but, i am feeling much better about passing on this... i just can't afford to buy every game i see this generation... with the PS2, i lived at home mostly and had funds to spend on whatever i wanted... which had me ending up with about 50 games and only about a dozen that were worth still playing... a ton of wasted money... this generation i have been extremely picky and it's because i can't afford to buy a new game every month because i own my own house... so far, mercenaries 2 has been my only bad purchase, which i traded in immediately for little big planet... and i think i'd rather just save my money until new vegas comes out...

maybe i might rent this game in the future... they say it's only about 12 hours long, which translates to about 16 hours for me biggrin.gif... and that even seems short for a sandbox game...
TwoFacedTanner
Okay anyone preorder it from Amazon or best buy?
I'll trade you the Vegas pack for your pack.
Or maybe even the war hero pack, which I don't really want to give up but desperate times call for desperate measures.
360 Version.
I won't have my copy until Saturday...but still, I mean if you can go without using your code until then.
I just really want the Rebel pack haha.

Wow...Craigslist Ad anyone?
Massacre
You're one BJ offer short of a Craigslist ad, sir.
DuPz0r
Looks like i can't afford to buy this right now, i may have to just rent it.

I understand what you're saying b0nEs. I really cant afford every game i see either.
PabloHoneyOle
I'm totally on the same page as b0nes and Dupz. I'll swing by Blockbuster today and if they have it, cool, I'll rent it. If not, no worries.

Besides, if it sucks, I'll probably be able to pick it up on the cheap in a month or so.
Marney1
I need to break my leg so I can play all these great games.
Without a physical injury that will prevent me working I can't see how I'm going to do that........do prisoners have access to PS3's?

I'm not getting it because I decided I don't want it. I would like to point out that I can afford it.

I'll leave my own little review here once I've completed it, and tell you all if i think it's worth buying anyway biggrin.gif

Even if you're not too keen on the game, you gotta love this lamp:
