So working on Flashy Kati got me wondering about other people's "GTA Style Photo to Drawing" techniques in photoshop.

I think my first try isn't that awful.

Like her bottom half looks really convincing as a drawing but her face and stuff looks like an image. Hmm.. any reccomendations?
Qdeathstar
it really doens't look that convincing, it kinda looks like a picture with some strange effects done to it...
Tranque
Well thats exactly what it is. Hm, well what suggestions do you have? I followed a tutorial and all I could get out of it was a weird effect that really only works when people/objects are far away. The one up there was just experimental.

The gta style concept artwork are actually hand painted. You need some good photoshop/paintshop pro/illustrator expereince fir this. For the older artworks, like vice city and SA it is easy to trace a vector of the shape of the person and then add the details over the top. The new GTA IV paintings require paint tool, smudge tool, dodge and burn tools, and general artistic knowledge.

My avatar is GTA style. I made this about 4 years ago. I may need to make an updated one soon. So i may make a tutorial about it.
Qdeathstar
yeah, but i think both of yours have too much detail, thought dupzor's is the closest by far biggrin.gif

If you look at my new sig in large it isn't really that detailed, it just seems it because of the small scale.

I think i had a wider range of colours, that may have made it seem more detailed.
Tranque
Nice effect heh. Makes the lighting more dramatic. Definitly cool

I tried my next hand at the effect and this is the closest I can get. I think I'll just use this effect from hereon.

TreeFitty
Yeah there really isn't one or two filters that'll do it automatically. real pics just have too much detail.
Tranque
Mhm, I thought so I'm just trying to mimic it in a stylized sort of way.

Which type passes off better though so I know which to use in the future.
DuPz0r
You have a good start there on the second one. But all you need to do is work into it more in a bit of detail. Like some areas are in need of more detail than others. Like make it a bit more crisp and sharper. While skin is quite flat and bland, eyes and hair need to stand out.
Tranque
You read my mind, I just finished another example, take a look.

ViceMan
Getting better.
Tranque
I thought adding a background might help and I used multiple layers to try and blend detail with the simple drawing style
TreeFitty
Definitely an improvement. just need to smooth it out.
DuPz0r
Yeah, try using the smudge tool, experiment with the hand tools rather then just blending layers and using filters.
Tranque
What I do is I use the filters to decrease detail dramatically, and I go in with the handtools to clean up the areas I need to clean up. Namely I use the eraser with like 10 percent opacity. I adjusted the businessman a bit, I'm not sure how it looks now. The second is a new one and my boyfriend insists that its the best i've done but I disagree. Here they are:

EDIT: What I've noticed is the problem is either too much detail or too little detail. Thats why I'm experimenting to see which mixture is best. Also the Faces are the *hardest* part. Somehow I can get the entire body just right but the face is the tricky one.

Here's another. Because I loathed the woman in the black dress.

TreeFitty
define the lines a little more. like between different objects.
Tranque
Heh I was trying to smudge it so it didn't look so harsh. Hm.. I'll find a middleground biggrin.gif

Hey I was wondering if some of you know any great video tutorials how to make that old vector styled Grand Theft Auto art. I want learn it so badly and mimick the same style we can see in the Vice City Stories artwork or San Andreas. Hey Dupzor if you know any guides give me a link or just make a guide. Please? smile.gif

if you have photoshop you can get a similar style with the "cutout" filter.
Jacko
Okay I'll try the guide and see what I can come up though I think this is meant for the IV-style which is no so cartoony but I'll give it a shot.
TreeFitty
It's all pretty much the same thing. Just depends how much detail you want to put into it.
Jacko
Yeah but is it the same thing like with vectors and stuff?
TreeFitty
Not actual vectors but you can achieve the same look.
