I know i said i'd post this last night but i fell asleep really early (was playing Sega Megadrive Collection all night and didnt sleep!)

I am a avid collector of graphic novels (not so much comics but i do have some from about 13 years ago when i used to read them alot floating about).

I own well over £2000s worth of books from just buying £70-100 at a time. Some of the ones i own are extremely rare or hard to get hold of like some of the Marvel Civil War tie-ins. Im only missing one of that collection at the moment. And im really desperate to find House of M: Excalibur (the prequel to the event) as its so fucking hard to find its doing my head in. Everytime a shop gets one its gone. Waterstones, Forbidden Planet etc. sad.gif

Yeah...so post away. Oh and if you want to have any recommendations just ask away.
Massacre
I'd suggest you buy the Joker one-shot graphic novel, it's kind of a non-cannon unnoficial Dark Knight sequal centered around the Joker (Batman doesn't appear until the final few frames). It's written by Brian Azzarello and the art is done by Lee Bermejo. It's really gritty and dark and the Joker is kind of a cross between the Dark Knight and traditional versions of the character.
PabloHoneyOle
I have all the Calvin and Hobbes books; a huge collection of the Bloom County and Opus books; both of the Maus books; The Maxx and Johnny the Homicidal Maniac.

I don't think I'm looking for anything else to read, but these are all of the comics/graphic novels I really appreciate.
Massacre
lol @ Calvin and Hobbes. I'd like to read Maus sometime, though.

Don't laugh. Bill Watterson is a GOD. Prove me wrong.
Massacre
I know that, it was just funny because I normally don't think of Calvin and Hobbes in the same category as Spider-Man or Batman.

I know that, it was just funny because I normally don't think of Calvin and Hobbes in the same category as Spider-Man or Batman.

The storylines aren't as long or drawn out, but there's more originality and character development in Calvin & Hobbes than the recycled subplots from the "comics". It's also full of intellectual humor and witty insight.

30 Days of Night is a pretty good read. The film isn't too bad either. Reletively faithful to the books.

I think my favourite graphic novel ive read (other than Watchmen) has to be either Fallen Son, Spiderman One More Day (last story written by JSM for the series) or the awesome X-Men Messiah CompleX which completely blew apart the X-men.
Massacre
I'm kind of iffy on Spider-Man's Brand New Day story. There was nothing wrong with the franchise the way it was. The only positive thing I can say about it is that it's good to see Eddie Brock doing something other than rotting in a hospital bed.
Full Metal Monkey
Yeah im not too keen on 'A Brand New Day' either. I prefer the series before he got RetConned. Even the art work pisses me off. The Spiderman before a brand new day was alot darker in terms of story and the artwork was more gritty (for spiderman that is).

I mean the whole thing with Aunt May being shot wish they'd let her die before retconning her and a truely dark side of Spiderman being seen. Still though it can only get better. Just hope they get Joe Quesda doing the artwork again soon but he only ever seems to do the big storylines nowadays.
Massacre
Did you see the Spider-Man/Kingpin fight in the prison? That was so badass. I'd never seen Spidey tear into someone like that, and the post-fight dialogue was the some of the darkest I've read since Captain America died. After the Civil War, Spider-Man was violent, slightly crazy, and the whole fugitive scenario was incredible. And then... Mephisto showed up, and Spidey was back in Aunt May's house and all the cool advances his powers had were gone. What really pisses me off is that right after he unmasked, there was an interview with the writer on G4, and he swore that they weren't going to retcon the series, that Spidey's unmasking and everything following it was permanent, and what did they do? They fucking undid everything.

I'm completely psyched about Dark Reign, though. Norman Osbourne is way better in his current position than he ever could have been as the Green Goblin, and I love the new Thunderbolts lineup and they're being converted into his personal hit squad. This could potentially be better than the Civil War.
Full Metal Monkey
Ive not read any of Dark Reign or bought any graphic novels in a while mainly due to being absolutely skint.

Losing my job would dent someones finances. sad.gif Still im getting a new one in a few weeks as soon as my SIA license clears and ill be earning around £700 a week so that means ill have plenty of cash to catch up. And with a 4 day on and 4 day off rota ill have plenty of time to read them.

Only thing i don't have is plenty of storage.

Oh and Massacre if you like your dark and edgy books you should definately check out Battle Royale. Ive got everything avaliable for the series. All of the manga's, the original book (which is a UK first edition) and the films. Battle Royal 2 sucked though.
Massacre
Whatever car you own, trade it in for a van, then you'll have storage, and if you're stuck in traffic, you'll have something to do. Wait, aren't you the one that owns a Nova? Nevermind. If actually owning a tangible comic isn't as important to you as just reading the story, you should download a torrent program, there's always someone uploading high-quality scans of the new comics online. I usually have to read them that way, I'm about an hour's drive from a comic shop.

As for Dark Reign, I won't spoil anything else for you since you haven't read it, but needless to say, it's amazing.
Full Metal Monkey
Use to own the Nova. Been through 2 other cars since then lol.

Both were Golf 2.0 GTi's. The first one i loved to bits but the head gasket went on it and the second one i still have and only managed to get it repaired the other day. Someone owed me big style and luckily hes a mechanic.

Not too keen on downloading comics i prefer to have them in hand. Especially from a collectors point of view. My nearest dedicated comic book shop is in Croyden about 30min drive away depending on traffic, otherwise ill goto to Waterstones (book retailer) and if they don't have what im after ill order it from them. Plus i get Waterstones points which gets me money off. At one point i had over £100's worth of points. Use that to buy my more expensive books like Akira (£25 bloody quid for each book! and the Aliens, AVP, Predator omnibuses).

Anyway im getting into bed to watch a DVD as its nearly 4.30am so ill check back tomorrow.

Oh yeah you living in the states is a big advantage for you as you get the books well before we do. I had to wait around 8months for Ultimate X-men 16 to be released over here. sad.gif
Massacre
If it weren't so financially draining, I'd just subscribe to all the comics I read, since I can go to any book store for the compilations later on. Actually my local library does a surprisingly good job getting the new trade paperbacks.
Full Metal Monkey
See i stopped going for the trade versions ive been going to the compilated versions as its easier for me. When i was younger id pop to my local news agents and get the latest X-men every two weeks but now its easier for me to keep with the graphic novel versions.

Anyway im seriously going bed lol.

On another not my cats just jumped up onto the desk in my front room, started licking his balls (or where they used to be) and gave me a very funny look. Little bit worried now...
Massacre
I woke up one morning and my cat was licking my eyes... I still don't know what to think about it. Good luck thinking about that and sleeping.
Full Metal Monkey

Massacre
I'd suggest the New X-Men: Childhood's End and X-Men: First Class compilations. I really don't know why I like these so much, but I do. I also suggest any Thunderbolts comics, especially with the new lineup. There is no comic series that makes better use of it's minor characters. Punisher: 'Nam is a great story as well.

Full Metal Monkey
Yeah ive got the Civil War Thunderbolts which i enjoyed. But im abit confused on Venom. Hes in the Thunderbolts yet Eddie Brock's been terminally ill in hospital.

Unless the Spiderman retcon happened before then?
curefreak
Hrrrm just finished Y the Last Man the other day was really good and funny and had lots to say about what the world would be like without men in it at all although i do think if there was only one man left on this earth i think all the females would be busy trying to get themselves pregnant than trying to assassinate or use him as a tool.

I thought the art was nice and clean and not as dark and scratchy as most Vertigo stuff which just leaves me cold for some reason.
Full Metal Monkey
Think ive seen it about but never really looked at it.

Just read about it on Wikipedia and looked at the images on google and it looks interesting. Might have to look into it.

It's really funny a lot of times the protagonist reminds me a lot of Chandler Bing from friends.

The current Venom is actually Mac Gargan, AKA The Scorpion. He's a much better Venom, IMO, because he's more violent and he's also a cannibal now. He's currently the "new" Spider-Man on the new lineup of Avengers (but you'll find that out once you get around to Dark Reign).

Eddie Brock is now Anti-Venom after the retcon. He's forgiven Spider-Man and he's now an full-time anti-hero instead of a sometimes hero/sometimes villain. His sybiote is white with black instead of black with white, and he got it after touching Martin Li/Mister Negative, and the touch also cured his cancer, and the new symbiote has some kind of healing ability, as well as not having the original symbiote's weaknesses, like fire and sonic waves.

Also, curefreak, is Y a single graphic novel or multiple volumes? I'm thinking of buying it.

Ahh that explains it. I was wondering why in the Thunderbolts Venom was known as Gargan. I was thinking to myself isn't that Scorpion.

I really want to get hold of the Black Edition of Spiderman, apprently its amazing.

The Black Edition is the one which was released shortly after the events of 9/11 and is apprently very moving. Only problem is that it was released 8 years ago and i think its going to be quite hard to find. Unless i start collecting JMS' series from the beginning. But even so going back that far is going to be hard to find the Graphic Novel versions.

Gonna update the rest of my collection post in a few days as i can't be arse to do it at the moment. Took me ages just typing all that up because i had to keep on going back and forth from my room to typing it on here and trying to put it in chronological order.

BTW whats your favourite crossover event for the Marvel Universe?

For me its Civil War and then the classic Age of Apocalpyse which i still have a few first print copy's lying around somewhere. And as for series event its Messiah CompleX (X-Men is my favourite comic) and also Planet Hulk/World War Hulk.
Massacre
It's got to be Civil War and AoA for me, too. Onslaught was pretty good, though.
Full Metal Monkey
Yeah ive got the graphic novel volume of that. The only other volume ive seen about is Volume 3 which i believe is the conclusion and so don't want to buy it because i know ill read it and miss all of the best bits in the middle. Can't seem to find Onslaught Saga Volume 2 anywhere though.

You really should check out Battle Royale though. Its a manga. The story is awesome. Check it out on Wikipedia if your uncertain. Just don't let your parents see it if your under 18 as its VERY explicit. The book (novel) is one of the most controversial books ever written and then manga version is basicly the book but with the controversial artwork included. It borders hentai.

I watch naruto >.<

Never got into Naruto, really. While the story seems good and it's moderately entertaining, Naruto's voice just pisses me off ridiculously - it's like Sponge Bob with a sore throat. It also seems a little bit cheesy. It would probably be better if I really got into it by watching it from the start; but 220 episodes? Damn. Of course, to be fair I did watch 167 episodes of InuYasha, and I'm currently reading another 100 plus manga chapters to see the ending, so I could probably find time to get into Naruto.

Oh right, this is the comic book thread. Eh, just forget what I said about his voice and pretend I'm talking about the Naruto manga.
Massacre
I try to revive the comic thread, and you come in here with Naruto? The fuck?

^manga = comics.

Hmm... Title needs to be changed to "Good Graphic Novel/Comic Thread," that'll keep it free of kids in orange jumpsuits who are clearly not ninjas.

I haven't had anything to do with anime/manga since Gundam back in middle school, so unless anyone reads Marvel or DC, there's not much I can say.
