The official Games for Windows website has been updated with the recommended system requirements for the PC version of GTA IV, which are as follows:

• OS: Windows XP SP2
• Processor: Dual core processor (Intel Pentium D or better)
• RAM: 2GB
• Hard Drive: 18GB free hard disk space
• Video Card: 512MB Direct3D 10 compatible video card or Direct3D 9 card compatible with Shader
• Drive: DVD-ROM dual-layer drive

If your current rig doesn't quite match up to these specs, at least now you've got a good reason to upgrade!

UPDATE: It looks as though Microsoft has pulled the requirements from the Games For Windows site now, meaning they were most likely placeholder requirements. Take these specifications with a pinch of salt until the page is updated again.

If I wanna chage the CPU, do i have to change the motherboard ?
And is a '' Direct3D 10 compatible video card '' similar to an NVidea GeForce FX8400 ?

Those are the recommended reqs.....so the minimum will probably be half of these.....

nope u just must re-setting the BIOS for the new CPU . about the graphic card, download the GPU-Z from google then see the DirectX version is it 10 or no and then check the Shader too

ur problem is the processor. RAM and graphics... i think there is no minimum req, coz it required like that

In my opinion, i think ur system would be fine to run on low setting, the only downside is the cpu is little slow.

the game will have min requirements, something like:

OS: Windows XP SP2
CPU: 2.8 GHz or faster for XP, 3.2 GHz or faster for Vista
RAM: 1 GB RAM for XP, 1.5 GB RAM for Vista
Graphic card: 256 MB video memory, NVIDIA GeForce 6800 GT/ATI Radeon 9800 Pro or greater
Sound: DirectX 9.0c compliant card

This is yet another sign that I need a new computer.

thnx for the info PCGamer! i did have my CPU oc'd to 3.00GHz with i think 810MHz FSB and my ram oc'd to 210MHz.. i may do that again, i wasnt having any cooling probs, just random game crashes (but that was my PSU being overloaded from 3 hdd, DVD-RW, and the 6800GT lol!).

18 GB of HDD Space needed WTF? isnt that a bit much?

The game's going to run at a maximum of 2560x1600 which means you need extremely hi-res textures. If you're going to make an entire city out of them, it's going to take up a fair bit of space.

Hard drives are pretty cheap nowadays anyway.

Indeed they are still a bit amount though and a large leap from san andreas's 4gb with radio installed onto your computer

Is the 18gb with radios installed onto computer?

Celeron cpu is ok, but is not recommend for gaming purpose, i suggest you upgrade but make sure your new cpu is at least dual core and running above 2.8ghz! BUT overall performance of the game will depend on whole of the system together, so you might be able to gta 4 at the lowest setting, if you're lucky.


NVIDIA 9500M GS is a good card, will def run gta 4, but don't expect th game to run at highest setting. laptops graphic card are always weak at gaming it comparison to the desktop ones! laptop GPU cards are designed to run cooler and on less power than their desktop counterparts.

You guys who are saying that you need at least a 2.8GHZ CPU are morons. Any dual core CPU will do. # of cores is more important than clock speed nowadays.

A 8400gs is a low budget card( not made for gaming purpose) can never compete with 8600xx or the 8800xx in the nvidia 8 series range so this guy is right gta 4 will run a low setting.

dual core cpu are only good for running multiple tasks, for game to take full advantage of dual/quad core cpus, both the operating system and the software should be must have simultaneous multi-threading technology (SMT) written into its code, not having SMT the software will only recognize one core. So a very fast single core can run current games on the market that guaranteed!

Probably not. 8600 is a mid-range, almost budget card. And since you have XP you won't be able to use DirectX 10, which is pretty much a necessity for running new games on full graphics nowdays.

u right change it to intel quad i prefer vista than xp, but its up to u. if going to change to vista maybe its better upgrade the ram

Vista make me nervous because on vista arent working all oldest programs and etc. and if a want to change to intel I need intel motherboard too... I think it would be ok to buy AMD Athlon64 6000+ or better Dual Core of course

You system would be just fine for gta 4. The AMD cpu will do the jobs for now, should upgrade near future. you got more the enough ram both for xp or even vista. No need to upgrade as 4gb of ram is wasted, well firstly you will a 64bit OS(vista/xp pro) to use effectively and secondly application would NOT see the the extra 1gb correctly and will not take the full advantage!

So you may not be able to run the game at the highest setting with dx10 textures and etc as u will require vista.

what do u use XP or Vista if XP, RAM OK, HDD OK but for the Intel P4 and the video card not. About the processor, at least u have 2 cores. and the graphics should change. if no, GTA4 wont be run. and if u use vista and have lots of stuff there, just add the RAM maybe to 3 or 3.5 GB
