my buddy unplugged my computer during a defrag and now every time i go to boot it up, it's unsuccessful. It just says system error and tells me to try to start in various modes (Ex: safe mode, command prompt mode etc etc), none of which are successful. Any help? thanks!

Get a disc of whatever version of Windows you're using. When you boot off the disc you can go into the recovery console. In Vista the disc might automatically fix the problem. With XP it takes a little more work but it's not that hard. At the XP recovery console window, type in the command fixboot it might ask a yes or no question, say yes. Then type in fixmbr and do the same. Restart the PC and see if that helps.
