Jordan at GTAPlanet did a good job of analyzing an easily misinterpreted quote from a representative at Rockstar in an article of PLAY magazine, a Playstation-oriented magazine.

QUOTE
"The game [GTA IV]is both PS3 and 360, but Rockstar has suggested that all further game development is going to be PS3 exclusive."

I italicized "game development" because the term is very obtusely vague and could mean any new franchise they are building. Remember the ho-hum about a new franchise being made by the team to be developed for the PS3? That could be what they are implying to. However, a simple gaff of words can't really account as to why a representative would say such a thing. Unfortunately though, I haven't found the article to which this was published so the context of this quote is a little misleading on it's own. It's considerably illogical from a business standpoint to take a AAA title and have it just be on a platform that is just starting to grow.

I have decided to post this so we can qwell any console hysteria perpetuated by some of the slower members of the community. As of now, this little quote is very unsubstantiated and for all we know may of been an editorial goof by the magazine.

Also, please be courteous and keep your console warrior/fanboy tripe to yourself in the comments. Thank You.

pretty much what i though they meant

Yeah, they said "all future game development" so if your saying they meant the "new franchise being made by the team to be developed for the PS3? That could be what they are implying to." that makes no sense... unless they don't plan on making another GTA series...

I think they ment that the GTA4 game development was done for the Xbox360 but not for the PS3....

A lot of titles are exclusive. Thats what the Console war is won on. Using your logic every game would be multi platform..

Jumping the gun yet again.

Of course exclusivity promotes an influx in sales of a particular console but the variable in this instance is the user base already established for the Xbox. On a developer standpoint, shafting over a million consumers would no doubt take a hit in revenue. Why chance on something as the PS3 when it's userbase is just starting to gain ground?

I see what you're saying but it's considerably odd unless Sony offered another exclusivity agreement in the wake of the whole DLC buyout.

Gotta be honest Pyro, I don't think your original post makes it exactly clear what is going to be exclusive. I think I know what the original statement means - All of Rockstar's games after GTA4 will be exclusive to the PS3, but I'm not sure if your original post makes that clear enough. I've already had a few emails from people asking for clarification. To be honest I don't think this is very big news at all, especially given the tiny snippet of a quote we've been given to go on.

If this is in fact what their statement means though, I can understand that. The reason GTA4 is multi platform is because Sony wouldn't pay Rockstar more to get GTA4 exclusively, so Microsoft gave them a bit more money for some exclusive content. Perhaps Sony have realized their ridiculous mistake and are now offering Rockstar plenty of cash to keep all of their new games exclusive to the PS3... Who knows, and to be honest, who cares. We'll find out later this year probably.

Yes, but with PS3 sales increases, cost of production decreasing, positive media attention (IE the "Year of the Playstation" on MSNBC.com), BluRay winning out over HD-DVD, and PS3 sales picking up pace, the momentem appears to be on Sony' side...
Pyrocy
Apologies for the lack of clarity but unfortunately, the full article wasn't posted so I cannot assure what in context the quote came from. If anyone can get the full article (translated in english as the damn thing is written in german...), PM me.

Just because the game may be exclusive, doesnt mean it cant be released on the other platforms on a later date, right?

Exclusivity is still a massive coup, but I always thought it was just basically delaying the other platform's versions.
Psy
Not always. There's temporary exclusivity like the previous GTA's coming out on PS2 for about a year before XBox got it, and there's permanent exclusivity such as Resistance on PS3 which will never go to Xbox 360.

Im looking forward to the year of the playstation 3 as long as GTA 4 isn't as bad (Framrate) in comparison as Skate was on the 360 then im very happy indeed.

P.S Skate on the 360 was a lot smoother than Skate on the PS3
