Ok it's been a while since vice city, but how do you get the mp3 radio station again? Where do i put the folder etc etc... or did they gimp the game and get rid of it?

they actually went to town - it now supports MP3s, WMAs, OGGs and M4As (iTunes) smile.gif

Ok no matter what i do i just cant get the mp3 player working. Ive tried copying both the mp3's themselves and shortcuts to the mp3s to the correct directory and its not able to play them in game.

I can select the radio channel in gta but it doesnt play the tracks, it just plays continuos adverts. Any ideas?

EDIT: Nevermind automatic track detection needed to be turned on from the audio options

or just manually scan from that menu when you change the content (handy if you have a huge music collection)

Yeah... I did both of the above... and still hearing only commercials... At one point after scanning, the game actually crashed on me. I got several shortcuts & 1 mp3 file in the usetrack folder.. none of them work... any ideas?
DeKo
shortcuts dont work. you have to copy + paste the file, not a shortcut...

i always thought that sucked i prefered to get a media player that uses as little CPU and memory usage and run it in the background instead

Like I mentioned in my post.. I suspected as much, so I copied 1 mp3 file in the usertrack as well, but it stil doesn't work...
Right now there's only 1 legit mp3 file in the folder... and when I tried it out.. the commercial runs... once it was done.. the radio channel jumped to radio los santos?!? wallbash_red.gif

wonder if opening WMP in the background would help?

u can run a media player in the background and just turn the radio in the game off

WMP sucks though i would get a better media player if your going to use one

Just did that.. didn't work either.. had like 10 mp3's in there.. still playing commercial only.. and everytime a segment of ads finishes, it just play another one or skip to a different channel..

Tried to re-scan the tracks again.. ended up crashing the game ~_^
Angry_Bader
Er shortcuts work just dandy for me
SalvatoreLeone
yeah the shortcuts do work, a good addition to san andreas' Pc version
Angry_Bader
Shortcuts have worked since GTA3. A nice little feature though i agree
diveaddict
Well, neither shortcuts nor the actual mp3 files work for me.. wallbash_red.gif

Does the mp3 file have to be of a certain requirement? Bitrate?

I suspect that GTA is not scanning the folder properly, cuz from what I read in the other posting, scanning should take awhile, but when I did it, it only took like 3 seconds..

Failure attempts:
1. Populating the folder w/ shortcuts
2. Populating the folder w/ mp3/WMA files
3. Populating the folder w/ both files
4. Leaving WMP open in the background (just in case GTA couldn't initialize media?)
5. Forcing the game to scan the user track folder multiple times (always ended up crashing the game)

Any suggestions? Thanks!
DjOneTwoThree
Install the latest version of Quicktime (from apple.com),that should sort it out.

oh and it's worth using the in game player rather than WMP in the background since you get adverts and it changes the sound of the music depending on what vehicle you're in, much more immersive smile.gif
jonny_CJ
i thought i was having the same problem but you just have to go audio radio, click on custom sound station (something like that). and just click search for ure tracks
diveaddict
Holy CRAP! DJOneTwoThree.. You're RIGHT! I had apple quicktime.. but updated it just now.. Now it works!! What the heck? The FAQ said WMP should work!... Anyways THANKS!! clap.gif

That kinda sucks tho, means GTA is relying on Quicktime? mad.gif

Just it's codec I think.
diveaddict
Yeah, I guess. But nevertheless, if it was that important to have that particular codec (a really new one too), it should've been included in the game...

Now I'm just happy to get the game working w/ the "other" bugs like everyone else biggrin.gif

Having a flashback of those "Missing VB300.dll" days... wink.gif

Thanks, great post!
Installing the crappy quicktime also workes for me now!

Ok mines been working fine. I was just wondering does anyone know how many songs you can copy to that folder? I think I have about 20 in there right now.
Anybody know?

MP3 is a patented technology; OGG Vorbis is open. Hence, they include the free Ogg Vorbis CODEC, and not the MP3 one that they'd owe licensing fees for. It makes sense, especially since OGM is pretty much as good or better.

Ditto on the previous post, anyone know if there's an upper bound on the number of MP3s you can use?

So far I have installed the new quicktime, but can somebody explain what to do next, just play it at the background?
DjOneTwoThree
i have about 40,000 mp3s linked from my user tracks folder and it works great smile.gif (took a few minutes to scan them all over the network but it's not like you have to do that often)

i think it uses quicktime to decode mp3s if you have it installed, falls back to WMP if you don't (QT is probably better in terms of CPU usage or sound quality or something). i'm guessing if you have an old, slightly broken quicktime install it might be attempting to use that instead of WMP.

Nope, don't even load the quicktime..
Just copy the shortcuts to ur mp3 files to the my documents/GTA San Andreas User Files/User Tracks, then have GTA scan for the media files

40,000!?! blink.gif

You'll probably finish the game before hearing all of them! roll2.gif

Guess you're weren't kidding when you use DJ as a handle

When I had the user track problem, I sent an email to the Rockstar tech-support, detailing what I did, more or less what was written in this thread. I just got a reply from rockstar.

Here it is:

"Dear Sir/Madam

Thank you for contacting Rockstar Technical Support.

To use custom soundtracks in the game, you will need to create shortcuts,
or copy the MP3 or WMA files to the game's user tracks folder

Shortcuts should be placed in My Documents\GTA San Andreas User Files\User
Tracks" Please ensure that My Documents is set to it's default location.
Once the shortcuts to MP3 or WMA files have been created, open the game and
choose Options.
Select Audio Setup then click User Track Options
Click scan user tracks and the game will verify the track shortcuts. A
message will be displayed in the bottom right corner of the screen if the
tracks were scanned successfully
Choose the 'usertracks' radio station and you should now be able to listen
to MP3 files in the game. Please note that the game will continue to play
the current advert until it is finished before it plays the next track

Also ensure there are no other background apps open as some music utilities
may prevent the use of MP3s if they are open as a background app

Please be sure to delete all previous correspondence when replying. This
will help us to process your response in a more timely and efficient manner.

Kind Regards,
Rockstar Technical Support"

I actually feel insulted reading the reply, since I've stated that I did everything the manual & readme file told me to do. I'm surprised that didn't add the "use your right hand to hold the mouse, and move your cursor on the ..... " wallbash_red.gif

If this is the kind of Tech-support we can expect from R*, then 75% of the users in this forum gets my vote for the R* tech-support replacement biggrin.gif

Herre's a tip guys:

Make shortcuts to the folders, unless you're really really picky, this will save you time. Otherwise, you'd be making shortcuts to every audio file on your system.
Capo
wallbash_red.gif wallbash_red.gif wallbash_red.gif wallbash_red.gif still doesn't work damn..... Did the shortcut thing
