So I'm thinking about putting together a new gaming rig in time for Battlefield 3. So far my parts list looks like:

CPU: Intel Core i5 2500k $219
Mobo: ASUS P8H61 Motherboard B3 $99
RAM: G.Skill Ripjaws 8GB (2x4GB) DDR3-1600 $65 (does it really make that much of a difference whether I go for 1333 or 1600?)
HDD: Samsung Spinpoint F3 1TB $59
GPU: HIS Radeon HD6950 1GB IceQ $249
Case: Antec 300 $59
PSU: Antec Neo Eco 520C $67
ODD: Samsung SH-222AB SATA DVDRW Drive $22
Monitor: Acer V223HQBD 21.5in Widescreen LCD Monitor $129
Mouse: Gigabyte M6900 Optical Gaming Mouse $26
Keyboard: Logitech K270 Wireless Keyboard $29
Headphones: Plantronics Gamecom 367 Closed Ear Gaming Headset $39

Total: $1062 (AUD).

Any advice/scrutiny? This will be my first PC build. SSD is a bit out of my price range.

I don't know how good those parts are and what the rig will be capable of, but what makes me stop is the prices. Can you really get a decent gaming rig for 1062 AUD? (I believe AUD is not worth much more than USD.)

Perhaps you know what you're doing, but I would have saved up more so I could double that budget.

Get an expensive mother card so the mother card isn't going to be a bottleneck when you need to upgrade stuff.

A little more RAM wouldn't hurt, but it's not really necessary. I would also go with an Nvidia GPU, but that's just personal preference. Other than that, it all looks great, it'll be one hell of a rig.

And Demon, my PC cost me 600 USD to build (I already had a hard drive and graphics card), and it'll run anything I play on full settings (until Skyrim comes out, that is). I don't know the USD-AUD exchange rate, but the parts he has listed are basically top-notch, without going overboard. And keep in mind that building a computer yourself will always be cheaper than buying a pre-made one. If I'd bought a PC with the same specs as what I have now, it would've cost $800-$1000 (as of June of 2010).

What do you know, there's a surprise around every corner. I'm not pretending to know anything, I'm just surprised. And if a pc that cheap can run any game on max settings, then I wonder why do people buy an Alienware gaming PC for USD 5000? I saw one in my local store last year. It was marketed as a gaming pc, not a professional video toaster.

No, my PC will run anything I play on max settings (Fallout 3 and New Vegas, basically), not any game. The PC Obs3n3's building will be able to run most games on max settings, or close to that.

And people who spend a fortune on Alienware PC's are either mesmerized by the fancy glowing case, or too stupid or lazy to build a PC of equal quality for a third of the price.

Yes I think the "fancy" Alienware cabinets are significantly rising the cost. And I personally think they are ugly too, so I wouldn't want to have them.
I don't want a PC that thinks it is a space ship. I'm not 16 any more.
