When I boot up my PS2, it rattles and makes noise. The noise does not happen if there is no disc in the drive, so it has to be the disc mechanism. But the noise is worse at booting before the game begins to load. And sometimes there is no noise at all.
I find that it helps to have the PS2 standing vertically, I put big books on both sides to prevent it from tilting. What is likely to be the cause? Worn out ball bearings? Or does it just need service and grease/oil? It's not more than about three years old, but I guess it has been used for about 1800-2000 hours. It is still working but I guess I should deliver it for service/repair, or prepare to buy another PS2. (If PS3 was still fully PS2 compatible I would buy a PS3 right now.) -------------------- The new GTA 5 website. GTA 5 forums.

Maybe the spinning part has come loose with ware and tear. Why don't you try opening it up have a look at it. Turn it on and find where the sound is coming from. Just don't blow yourself up lol.

How do I make it spin with no disc in it? I don't know how to dismantle it, I see no screws. I think I'll call the shop and ask what they charge for repairing it, but I guess if the repair takes more than 15 minutes I might just as well buy a new console, because labor is expensive. -------------------- The new GTA 5 website. Remove the rubber squares underneath it, they hide the screws inside there.
Try removing the power cables and then rotate the mechanize manually with your finger and see if it still rattles, and then you'll know for sure that that's the problem. -------------------- |

If that is the problem, can I fix it without getting the read head out of position? I'll see what I can do. Thank you so much. -------------------- The new GTA 5 website. GTA 5 forums.
