my ps3 fan just suddenly got very loud and sounded like it was running really fast, it hasn't done this before, i turned it off and checked for dust but there was none blocking the fans, it seems to be ok now running like normal,

anybody's ps3 done this before ?

Mine started doing this last week. I started bricking myself, thinking it a YLOD. Nothing's happened so far and I still haven't found out what caused it.

Nah, that's normal. As your PS3 ages, it will gradually build up dust inside. the load noise is you fan running at maximum speed to help cool the ps3 down.

It ususally kicks in 10 mins after I start playing a game. Turn off and it stops, but when I start playing a game, it does again

This would suggest to me that your hardware is working harder when loading the game data. When computers work harder they get hotter. So your fans are doing there job, so fo' get about it. If your PS3 was getting really hot but didn't sound like a hair dryer, that's when you should start to worry! wink.gif

Mines a 40GB launch SKU and, up until the last few months, its worked fine then the noisy fan kicked in. I brick myself everytime it boots up cos I think the warranty is now up. But if what Dupz says is true, then I should be fine. OOC, how do you have your PS3 - horizontal or vertical?

Mines a 60GB launch. Been doing it for about 6 months until I took it apart a few weeks ago and hoovered out all the dust. Put it back together and now it's as good as gold.

Yeah, I've also done this. My warranty is well and truly up, so taking it apart doesn't bother me too much.

Ditto Dup. I find it funny sometimes though how people who can happily stick their face in a computer and replace shit won't touch their games consoles with a ten foot barge pole because they fear just looking at the insides will kill it. I love the PS3 fan though, I'd never seen it before until I took it apart. That thing is a monster.

Not as monstrous as the one i have on my PC case tongue.gif but it's pretty huge for a console non the less!

Trust me, it's quite hard to mess it up inside. unless you start tugging bits out. I normally open it up, grab a vacuum cleaner and small paint brush and start sucking the dust away.

But here is the lazy way of cleaning it, which i do occasionally:

I was gonna say, I'm sure you started a thread with the same problems before? And on the old forum too.

But yeah, just keep your PS3's clean, and well ventilated if you don't want the fan in overdrive.

yeah, my room is like an oven anyway as its on the corner of the house an the sun is on it most of the day. just to say, when i moved it downstairs last week it didnt move the fan up a gear, so its dependent on the room temp obviously. I opened mine in june, replaced the thermal paste and cleaned it out a bit, the fan stiil makes the noise but doesnt get the the highest level and takes longer for it to do it. Only do this if you are out of the 12 month warranty and if you feel confident to do it.

p.s theres guides on the net on how to open the ps3 up if it helps

I'm with you on this one. I'd too scared of opening up incase something happened and, knowing my luck, something WOULD happen. I know Sony have guides on how to do it but I don't wanna take that risk. I'm not sure about the warranty, I took out an extended plan - got it back around 2007/2008 so it might be up by now. Will have to check that out. If it's not up, I'll send it off to Sony.
