Tap a key or move mouse slowly.

Better Still is to get a USB Generic (12 Button) GamePad as recommended by the Rockstar people.
The left analog stickallows a very slow walk to a run. Then using another button with the stick he'll sprint.

I use a Logetech Dual Action, works great. Straight from the box without having to install any fancy drivers.

The mouse sounds plausible as a way of fine control. I wasn't sure what you could use the mouse for.

But tap a key? That is still 0 or 1 and barely good enough for emergency control if the mouse fails.

How do you steer slightly left/right?

How do you rotate (aim) a weapon slowly?

How do you walk slowly?
How do you walk faster?

How many walking speeds do you want? Walk, run and sprint should be sufficient shouldn't it? Why would you be that bothered that CJ doesn't have a speed between walk and run? "Oh, I wanted to complete this mission while walking at a fast pace but not fast enough to break into a run."

I speak only for myself now. I demand all possible speeds in between standing and sprinting. If it is necessary or not is a moot point. I'm very demanding and if I had the PC version I would have purchased special game controls. But I'm happy to not have to purchase the extra set of controls.

It makes the game feel more realistic, and also helps when balancing on edges etc. And not to mention stunts. Any stunter knows how important maximum vehicle control is.

The game manufactorer Recommends the GamePAD for proper game play.

Like a PS2 or Xbox gamepad?

From all the comments on the forums I would not suggest getting an adapter cord to use the PS2/3 or xbox controllers.
I use a Logetech Dual Action GamePad/Controller. I have previously used Seitek and both worked straight from the box without any special drivers.
Using ingame assignments you can make the buttons work almost any way you want.

Ive always got by using the ps3 controller plugged in with the USB and then searching google to find some software to set it up. it takes longer than it would with a proper gamepad for the pc but to save the money its certainly worth it
