"On Nov. 3, the Duval County School Board voted 5 to 2 against changing the name. The five members who voted to keep the name were white. The two who voted against it were the board's only black members."

Well that "Yes, we can" zeitgeist didn't last long.

He was also a civil war hero... for the south. He was a former slave trader. He hated black people. The school was named after him to spite black people after the integration of public schools back in the 50's.

He's probably shitting in his grave knowing there's "dem neggras" playing for his namesake's football team and getting an education.

Who gives a shit anyway; Forrest Gump was named after the same guy and look at all he did for America and history.

^I was waiting for someone to mention Forrest Gump. Anyway, I figured this story was open and shut. It's fucked up but in the end the school will keep its namesake. Whitey wins.

You're absolutely right.
Why would they want to keep that name.

We shouldn't name anything after Southern Civil War heroes and military leaders.
They should rename it after black historical figure.

I doubt they named the school after him in honor of his Klan duties.
They most likely named it after him because of his actions in the Civil War.

Thats why they'd want it named that.
Its why other schools are named after other high ranking officers during the Civil War.

Exactly, cause doing otherwise would be racist and ignorant.

Oh, so it's not named after him becuase he was a slave trader or the founder of the Ku Klux Klan, it's becuase he fought so bravely to keep blacks as slaves? How is this diffrent in the slightest?

He was fighting for his own ideals, for him it was the right way of life, and he fought for it. What counts here is not what he was fighting for, but how he was fighting. Cause it's not the right side that always wins, it's the winning side that comes off as the right one. And just so happened that Forrest was on the losing side, doesn't mean he's any worse than the generals on the winning side.

Well, let's not get into what is good and what is evil... what is right, and what is wrong. Such words are better paired with religion and if argued by secular individuals the lines become hazy. Therefore, most meaning is lost as words themselves are only assigned definition by morphemes. That school could have its whole history re-written and years later no one will know that it stood for what history calls a racist xenophobic zealot.

Substitute "The South" for "Nazi Germany", watch your argument die, go watch TV.

Glad to see Skinny made the obvious point already. But since I wasted 10 seconds of my life typing it...

Would it not be better to keep the school with the same name so people actually remember the past, rather than let it fade away and be erase just for similar circumstance to occur again?

And you dont think there are other ways to do that. other than glorify him, ie, put a picture of Obama in the white house. After a while, people would forget who the guy is in the first place, so it won't keep anyone from repeating the past.
