Contrary to what we were originally led to believe, the first news on GTA4's multiplayer came from Spain, not Germany. PSM Spain's new article features 20 new screenshots, and has information on some of the multiplayer gametypes you'll be able to play.

Information is being constantly updated, however here is what we know so far:
  • There are 15 multiplayer game modes.

  • The multiplayer will support up to 16 players.

  • You can fully customize the look of your character online, including their sex, hair, clothing, race, accessories, etc.

  • Online game modes include:
    • Hangman's NOOSE
    • Car Jack City
    • Bomb da Base
    • Bomb da Base II
    • Mafia Work
    • Team Mafia Work
    • Deathmatch
    • Team Deathmatch
    • Turf War
    • Cops N Crooks
    • Race
    • GTA Race
    • Deal Breaker
    • Free Mode

  • In the Race and GTA Race game modes, the game host is able to decide which vehicles can be used, and how many laps will be played. In typical GTA tradition, you can even shoot at your opponents cars, throw molotov cocktails, or even steal pedestrians cars in the middle of the race. Awesome!

  • In the Deathmatch and Team Deathmatch game modes, the game host can decide how many pedestrians will populate the streets, how much traffic will spawn, which weapons can be used and even whether the police will intervene or not!

  • Cops N Crooks involves one team playing as the cops, and one as the criminals. The criminals objective is to escape the cops, and obviously the cops objective is to stop them from escaping. The cops GPS will show the location of the criminals, however the criminals themselves have no idea where the cops are.

  • In Mafia Work and Team Mafia Work, you play as mafia henchmen of Kenny Petrovic. You have to complete hits ordered by the boss via a cellphone call before your rivals are able to make the kill.

  • Good news regarding the map. The map used in multiplayer is the exact same one used in Single Player. Whether or not the full map will be used for all gametypes is still unknown.

  • Co-Op mode is also included on a single player mission called "Hangman's NOOSE". You can play alongside a friend and help them escort a mobster while being chased by a SWAT team.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but, If you can change your appearance in Multi-Player, it would seems stupid not to allow in single player?

I doubt that anything will get changed with GTAIV, even with EA trying to take over...These things don't just happen overnight. The game is probably going through testing at this stage, and is pretty much complete, so I wouldn't worry about EA spoiling this game...It may however affect future games in the series if they do get their way by purchasing Take Two.

The single player follows a specific story-line, that of Niko. I'm assuming that in multi-player, you will be controlling some nondescript street thug with no designated specifications and therefore is totaly open to customisation.

I think the free roam mode will be pretty cool...Get together with a couple friends, go out drinking, maybe play a game of pool...Then after that you can all jack a car and have a drunken street race...Lots of possibilities here.

You know, Volition the creators of Saints Row(2) said that they thought they could contend with Rockstar because they had a full co-op mode for the single player campaign. That is, unless Rockstar was holding something back.

You know, when I think of GTAIV I always forget that it has online multiplayer. I know LCS and VCS had multiplayer, but because the console versions never had it I always forget that its gonna be in the new one. Good info though.
