I'm currently in the process of putting together a site and I need hosting. I'm still searching for hosts, but it gets confusing as to whats what. As I continue to search myself if anybody can recommend any solid host I'd appreciate it, thanks if anybody can help...

It really depends on what you want to do. Are you going to be using server-side scripting? Multimedia? Do you need to send mass email without getting it labeled as spam? Are you going to be using e-commerce? I pay about $130/year for a PhP host that has MySQL and a bunch of pre-written PhP stuff. The email gets labeled as spam by some filters. I think it is because the host is known to host sites that spam, thereby putting their IP address on some black lists. I only use this site to practice PhP and post a limited number of public things. If I were using e-commerce features, which my host does provide, I would have a different host because I have some concerns about the security of the one I use.

What do you want to do with it?

DreamHost is amazingly popular among shared host users, but I've never used them myself, if you do use them then the offer code "SOMETHINGAWFUL" will give you a load of extra stuff. My friend is network manager for a local school (+1000 students, + staff etc) and they run their website/intranet of Dreamhost with minimal issues.
1&1 is also popular again no personal experience.

DreamHost.com looks good. They offer more than my host and appear to be more concerned about security. I don't know anything about their uptime and performance. I am already tempted to move to them.

appear to be more concerned about security.

Last I heard people got hold of a number of customer's details because they stored FTP passwords in a plain text file or something...think it was in June this year-ish.

Maybe that explains why they are looking for a new Systems Administrator...

I used emaxhosting.com.
Cheap, very reliable, and you get lot's of features.
