This article was too damn interesting and thought provoking to pass up. Get ready for some nostalgia because Edge magazine has an awesome online article up about the making of the original Grand Theft Auto...
QUOTE(Edge) Its early days, however, are somewhat easier to piece together. “The original idea was to create a game based in a living city,” remembers DMA lyricist and PR head Brian Baglow. “The idea was to build an active environment that could react to the player and where there were consequences to their actions.” The article gets juicier as it details the frustrations that went amongst the DMA Designs' (now Rockstar North) designers. -------------------- ![]() Add Me on MySpace if you're so inclined... QUOTE (Heartless on GTA4.TV) Unlike the mainstream forums, we're gritty, crazy sociopaths. And still approved by Rockstar. Most GTA Sites cater to a younger, softer audience (Zidane?), as opposed to this forum, which caters to bi-polar grandmothers with too many cats (Pyro?). |

Thats was nice to read
QUOTE The series that resulted has been copied countless times, but few imitators have stoppped to think that the secret to its success may lie in the process, not the product. Race 'n' Chase, what a shitty name. Imagine if it went ahead then we would be on RNCGuides.com.

“I sat through heated design meetings, which resulted in tears. Screaming, punches and arguments were common.”
They where actually developing a game where you use flower power guns to save the world, but they found the meatings more fun, so they developed a game around it. -------------------- ![]() ![]() ![]() Jingo' Thompson Seal of Approval™ |

I like the idea of a Isometric gta, but im glad they produced what they did at the time. Was the most realistic game to come out at the time.

Technically, you could say DRIVER: PL is the more realistic one, but it isn't any fun

I found a copy of GTA II in my sock drawer
Good article though...just goes to show that the making of the game proves more important than the quality of the game itself... Though they cant say who can take credit for the success of gta. You can tell R* kept the same work ethic that DMA Design had for the original game.
You can see when
QUOTE(article) “We could not compete graphically with, say, Ridge Racer, so we were banking on the fact that the game was radical in terms of gameplay and its edgy content. the same goes with current gtas. the graphics arent up to par with whats out there, but the gameplay over-powers that fact to produce an awsome game. you get lost in the game and after playing for 10 mins you dont notice the lower end graphics
-------------------- ![]() |
