QUOTE
In general, raw products of nature are not patentable. DNA products usually become patentable when they have been isolated, purified, or modified to produce a unique form not found in nature.

We can talk about the general topic if people wish, thus the link but I'm more interested in hearing views on what's been put in bold.

So does that mean they can take a certain type of person or strand of DNA and make sure nobody else uses it?

Pretty much.

Patents last for 20 years, excluding the year you have to file for one.

Not really you go spend 500 million on finding a certain strand of dna to cure something and then have another company steal it.

But then there are also other cases that are..........well............sort of controlling to the average person.

It's retarded. Companies are patenting random DNA sequences, but what happens when in the future, a company comes up with a cure for something (cancer?), and they patent their cure, but another company patented the sequence they need? The company already spent millions going for the cure, and can't afford to pay the other company for the patent, and they're SURE AS FUCK they aren't giving the cure to the other company for any price...

Apparently we already have the cures for everything we'll ever come across on this planet.

This is simply because drug/biomed companies have factories and labs where machines test every known compound against every other known compound. Once they know whart affects what they log it and store a sample.
We've pretty much found every drug we'll ever need, we just don't know what ones we'll need yet.

That's what companies spend millions on. They do the same with proteins, DNA sequences, RNA sequences. Pretty much anything they can think of i the hope that one day if a combination is needed then they will have it.

Patents just stop other people stealing their ideas.

There needs to be more rules to stop patenting being abused, the patenting that goes on now is the opposite of a free market as big companies use them to make sure that small companies or individuals can\'t compete with them without tripping over a patent and being sued which is the opposite of what the patent system is supposed to achieve.

Yes that really proves nothing though, as in theory which is basically what all those drug fomula are, in theory we could travel at light speed, but in reality the possiblity to make some that actually does what we want in an economically viable way isn't possible and that is the same with the drugs, it is all good to say how to cure it but to actually make that cure may not even be possible.
