Just found out from over the webz that Rockstar refused to sell Fox the rights for a GTA movie starring Eminem. While for some of you this might be dissapointing at first, what really troubled me was the reason for the refusal: it seems like Fox didn't paid enough money. Would that mean that Rockstar can ultimally be bought with a "fair price", no matter who makes the movie, or how? In my opinion, a GTA movie should avoid becoming "the blockbuster ASAP" type, filled with special effects and notorious superstars. It has to become a cult movie, (maybe) low budget and no-name actors and such. The intro for GTA2 is just awesome, and it would stand as a good example!

So, what do you think? Can Holywood do it, or would it trash it? Is it good, or is it bad that the chance was "killed"?

Eminem doesn't seem like a good fit for a GTA protagonists to me, anyway.

R* have already said they will never make a GTA movie, and there should never be a GTA movie in the first place. A movie, or even a TV show could never do GTA justice, unless maybe, maybe, HBO or Starz made a series on a decent budget, but R* would have to have their own people writing and directing. But, that won't happen. No movie, no TV show, and that's a good thing.

A GTA movie would be a disaster in my opinion. It would have to be A-List stars if it was to do the series any justice. Sure people would go and see it no matter what, but how many fans would leave the cinema thinking - "Well that was shit, nothing like GTA"? People would expect it to be based on one of the titles, not just a mish mash of car-jacking and mindless mayhem which is what it would be.
Like I said, that's my opinion.

^Pretty much what the argument boils down to. The fun of GTA is playing it and making things happen. Watch one of those crazy criminals on camera shows with police chases, stolen tanks, robbed banks, etc and pretend it's the same person running from the cops. That's a GTA movie. tongue.gif

This seems unlikely. I wouldn't enjoy a GTA movie. GTA is like a semeiotic god of all movies. You can't make a movie about a game which is about loads of epic gangster films. It just wouldn't work tbh...

I'm sure I heard this rumour years ago, complete with Eminem as the leading role, which made me laugh.

I remember the GTA2 intro, at the time it was some of the most awesome I had seen on a pc screen. Maybe it still is.

A GTA movie would most likely be an expensive piece of shit, but it could perhaps be an okay movie depending on the script. Hopefully they would not use too much special effects.

I doubt Eminem or Martha Stewart would make a great protagonist in a GTA movie. rolleyes.gif

I'm afraid a movie containing all that would be too ridiculous. Doing it in a game is fun but I don't think I would think it was a great movie...

Why is this in the GTA IV section anyway? It was not mentioned that the movie would be about IV in particular?

We don't have a general GTA section, this is as good a place as any amongst the GTA section. Entertainment makes more sense, though.

well, asking things in the right section is most difficult for me sometimes in any forum, hopefully this is not a reason to get someone banned, since it can be corrected by a moderator with just a few clicks tongue.gif

plus: the success of a gta movie shouldn't be about holywood stars, but about the theme, the script, and the filming technique. i remember el mariachi, for example, which is quite praised (and which i didn't see!) for being made with... dunno... 7000$? the plot is quite GTAish (his gf is being killed, i guess?, and he is going on a killing-trip after all the bad guys?), and it was the start for antonio banderas (which means he was still a no-name!). so... yeah... i guess this prooves a point? at least that's the gta movie i would make... if i'd be a director tongue.gif

I don't think the humour would carry over too well, it would either be too jokey or too serious. Plus it would have to be at least six hours long to convey the epicness of it. GTA games are movies in their own right, we don't need some dipshit Hollywood studio bringing some halfarsed attempt at a movie out in order to make a quick buck. And let's face it; this is what it would boil down to. If it was made entirely by Rockstar, it might be alright.

While I'm in this forum, Grand Theft Auto the Movie trademark.

The registration process is a bit too longwinded to go into detail here, but I think that when a company files a trademark and the trademark is accepted they are sent another document called a statement of allowance. They then have to file a statement of use within six months of the mailing date of the statement of allowance, or request an extension or the trademark is then filed as abandoned after publication. This can be appealed for a period of two months.

Yes and no, the trademark can be re-registered, but the party that is re-registering generally has to have some affiliation with the original owner.

Okay. It's funny, I can register it since I do have some affiliation with Take-Two. (I've bought a few of their games.)
