I finished TBOGT a few days ago and decided it's time to sum GTA IV series up. I am not going to provide an in-depth analysis, but I wanna pinpoint biggest ups and downs of all GTA IV games, comparing the 3 games vs. one another as well as against previous GTA games (with GTA San Andreas as the main reference).

GTA IV world in general:

PROS
- new game engine: graphics (architectural details!) and animation, also 5.1 sound (I'm not sure whether the latter was a novelty indeed)
- vast urban landscape to explore
- variety and accessibility of means of transport
- driving: more realistic than before and varying from vehicle to vehicle
- great new vehicles (esp. sports cars)
- friends & activities done with them: a fun and semi-organized way to spend time in free-roam
- increased AI of peds and drivers
- more realistic behavior of peds and drivers - they actually go from point to point (not just drive around like in previous GTA games)
- cool collectibles wink.gif
- usable internet

CONS
- playability in general; while GTA SA was a complex and fun game to digest, GTA IV was so only at times, leaving few things to do after getting 100% (or even before that)
- complex player character development(Niko/Johnny/Luis) development (no bodybuilding, too few clothes, no tattoos...)
- no vehicle customization (no modding garages like in SA)
- no rural landscapes (this is a controversial argument, I know - it's LC after all, but San Andreas's countryside/desert landscapes added a lot to the atmosphere)
- no driving schools (they were so much fun in SA), no gun

Now let's see about 3 GTA IV games:

GTA IV

PROS
- it was the main game, so it had more of everything than the DLCs
- unique jumps (DLCs don't have them)
- relation between friend's relations and storyline
- choices you can make in the main storyline
- interesting car theft missions (no exact location of vehicles, images via phone)

CONS
- very few side activities
- no paramedic/firefighter missions
- a lackluster character (Niko) with douchbag appearance and no balls (no match for Claude, Tommy or CJ)
- too easy and too one-sided missions

TLAD

PROS
- great new music
- cool bikes
- awesome safehouse (TLAD club)

CONS
- too one sided missions (half of them might as well be part of the gang wars thing)
- softness of the character (Johnny) - not how I imagine leader of a biker gang; I'd prefer Billy hadn't he turned out to be a betraying scum
- too easy theft jobs/dirty laundry side missions
- boring gang wars
- too easy and boring final mission

TBOGT

PROS
- parachutes/base jumps
- triathlon races
- drug wars (with a variety of types)
- great new vehicles
- finally a cool tough guy character (Luis), not a fucking pussy

CONS
- too easy and boring final mission

_______________________________________
FINAL VERDICT
I'd say even if put together, all GTA IV games are no match to the fantastic playground that was San Andreas. Technical advancement excites for a brief moment only, but it is playability that differs fascinating games from just good ones.

Within the world of GTA IV itself I'd say TBOGT is the best installment (which is, hopefully, good sign for the future - R* saw what went wrong with GTA IV and TLAD, unless of course all 3 games had been designed at once at the same time), although of it is GTA IV - the main game that is the biggest and thus offers most fun in total.

And what do you think?

Gay Tony was the best. GTAIV was great. TLAD was good.

I don't feel like getting into details; you touched on most of them, but I'm not that big of a cynic.

My biggest disappointment is that Rockstar most likely thinks that the lackluster Lost and Damned is good enough for them to not make another game about a biker gang...

Am i the only one who liked TLAD? I liked TLAD and TBOGT better than the orginal GTA 4.

By tony do you mean Tommy?
Also you put to easy and boring final mission as a TLAD pro, sound more like a con.

I liked TLAD, but it could of been better. I guess we was all expecting it to be as good as GTA4 at the time.

I can't say I didn't like TLAD, but I think that storyline-wise it was weaker than GTA IV and TBOGT. Also most of side activities were not as much fun, although I must say I enjoyed hanging out with fellow bikers (in spare time/when calling for support/when driving together as part of missions). Also props for the new music on LCHC - extreme metal fitted the biker gang like no other genre (it was also cool to hear LCHC play at the Lost clubhouse).

BTW, did anyone notice that (in TBOGT) Armando makes (positive) comments whenever Luis switches the radio to LCHC? And I thought he was a complete moron wink.gif

I liked the final Lost and Damned mission. It could of been better, but at least it was better than BOGTs.

No it wasn't. It was too damn easy. Both TLAD's and TBOGT's final missions were too straightforward and predictable, but I guess I expected more from TLAD as most of its missions disappointed me, which wasn't so in the case of TBOGT.

When doing the final part of TBOGT's final mission, Freefall (from GTA SA) came to my mind instantly. Although Freefall was much more fun. Also the first part of the mission was so-so. I liked the middle part (riding the bike to the airport) most.

I dunno, i really liked the story and missions in the TLAD, it seemed alot darker than GTA 4 as he lost pretty much everything at the end, TBOGT was alot more tongue and cheek it seemed, more like previous GTA's on the PS2, much more over the top missions, i really liked the last one, reminded me of sanandreas aswell, so did the mission on TLAD where you on the back of the bike shooting the police chasing you.

You mean 'Just Business'. Yeah, I like this type of missions. That was the best mission in TLAD, by the way. I'd enjoy basically any mission that isn't limited to a shootout and sadly that's what most TLAD missions were about, only the location changed. What about combination of stealth, shooting from a moving car, chase, parachuting onto target, team combat with a partner, location changes?

I sometimes think that I demand too much, but then multiple missions from GTA SA come to my mind...that was the game...

I'm not liking the mission targets of TBOGT. [Speed / Damage % / etc ]

That will most likely keep me from 100% for the first time in my GTA history.

Now things like friend activities, 50 seagulls, random pedestrians become even easier in comparison.

So that is a big con for me. Lots of pro's though, nice write up 6 shooter.

Thought TLAD was great. Club house should have stayed open - that's about all I didn't like.

Getting 100% in mission targets isn't necessary to get 100% in the whole game, so cheer up smile.gif

I also don't give a flying fuck about that - mission can be either passed or failed, there's no third way.

Well then, thanks 6 shooter, I read it wrong. I will cheer up. This had me spooked:

Mission Completion
New in the Ballad of Gay Tony is the mission scoring system where you are rewarded for completing
missions based on various criteria. You can see what these are, and how well you completed the mission
after you complete one. You're also told that once you finish the game you can replay any mission whenever you want.

Mission 100% Completion Criteria
In order to get 100% completion for this mission you need to fulfil the following criteria:

I just did the golf mission, I am so bad- can't wait for the dance mission.
Golfing with Armando and Henrique was okay though.....maybe even fun.

The Lost and Damned seemed so much more manly I guess. tongue.gif

Doesn't look like it. Just rewards for "story mode completion".

I completed The Ballad of Gay Tony today but I wont drag GTA: San Andreas in to this because it's not necessary. It's part of a different era (GTA III) and we're talking about IV-era here.

Grand Theft Auto IV

PROS

-Amazingly detailed, wide, realistis and very well designed gameworld (whole NYC basically).
-Perfect game engine and realistic physics; every movement happens differently.
-A very indepth story and character development ever seen in a Grand Theft Auto-game.
-Multiplayer with variety of modes, activities and fun stuff to do.
-Realistic gameplay; better pedestrian AI, driving of vehicles and weaponry, physics etc.
-Characters, Friends activities, free roaming and array of vehicles.
-A diverse selection of missions and nice sidemissions (assasin, car thefts, drug deliveries, 200 pigeons, unique stunts).
-Because it's the main game it has obviously the best and most indepth storyline of all the three games.

CONS

-Most of the music tracks available in the game are not that appealing. I mainly listen to the Jazz Nation Radion because all the other tracks are simply dull and boring.
-Lack of gameplay after you've completed the whole game and all the storyline missions.
-That special "GTA feel" of the previous games.
-Too easy compared to the other Grand Theft Auto-games.

The Lost and Damned

PROS

- A great set of new vehicles; mostly different motorcycles but still.
- New weapons to help you during your quest.
- Interestin storyline with a few plot twist lining with the original Grand Theft Auto IV's storyline.
- The Biker setting has been created perfectly in the game and you really get a different perspective to the whole Liberty City.
- An improved soundtrack with some better tracks compared to the original game.
- A bit more challenging than the original Grand Theft Auto IV from the start.
- Great characters (though Johnny seems a bit wussy to be a Vice President of the Lost).
- Nice new multiplayer modes continueing the excellent biker theme.

CONS
-Too dull and boring side missions with no diversity at all (I was especially disappointed with the gang wars).
-Too fucking short only about 22 missions which are mainly just "shoot your way through enemy waves" type of missions. Come on Rockstar I would've added atleast 50 missions in total.
-Lack of variety in missions and boring final missions.

The Ballad of Gay Tony

PROS

- A great set of new vehicles and not just motorcycles this time
- New weapons to help you during your quest and even better than in TLAD.
- Once again an excellent jump in themes, from the gritty and brutal biker setting into the luxury nightlife of Liberty City. For the first time ever the city of Liberty seems very bright and fresh setting for a GTA-game. Overall the game feels like VC but not quite.
- Great characters and good protagonist to whom all young males can identify themselves with.
- Missions are more challenging, more diverse and action packed, but still retain succesfully the variety within. Even with the big bang in almost every missions, they're not as blunt as in TLAD. You can even try to accuire certain points in the missions and try completing them 100% which adds more gameplay hours to the short game.
- Best soundtrack out off all GTA IV-era Games: Grand Theft Auto IV, The Lost and Damned and The Ballad of Gay Tony. This got to be the only IV-era game where I've been constantly listening the radio and I love the 80's and the 70's disco music.
- More interesting sidemissions than TLAD has. You can play Drug Wars, a major improvement over the dull gang wars and of course you can dance, be a bouncer, get drunk and kick some ass on the undergroung fighting ring.

CONS
- Apart from great characters the storyline isn't as great as in TLAD or IV and it's overshadowed by guns, explosions, nightlife and stuff. Maybe Rockstar wanted just to focus on having number of humorous characters and missions which end with a bang. The name of the game suggests that it is supposed to concentrate around Anthony Prince but the guy doens't get that much face time.
-The game is still too short because it only contains about 26 missions and you can complete the game easily in less than a week even though you would do all the sidemissions. But luckily there's the new mission system allowing players to score points and and trying to get 100% out of all the missions. Thanks to this and the sidemissions it took me over a month to complete this game and no this is not a joke. When I played TLAD it only took about a week.

OVERALL

Every game has it's downsides and upsides but I cant determine which one of them is the best because they're all too great.
Damn you Rockstar for making these fucking good games. I cant decide which is the best so I will just say they're all good. tongue.gif
If you like Grand Theft Auto IV, then you're surely going to love the DLC's too.

I thought GTA IV had the best storyline, but only because there was more room within the game to develop it with it being a full game and not an expansion. I think TLaD had the best main character, I found that I identified with Jonny more than I did with Niko and Luis. Also, I loved the feeling of being part of a gang again and thought the way they structured the missions made it much more appealing to use bikes than the other games. I also loved the noise effect in the game and the way the whole game was more gritty in general. Finally, TBoGT had the best supporting characters; I literally ROFL'd first time I saw Maurie Kibbutz. This episode also added a lot of fun features like the base jumping, cage fighting etcetera. I also like the bright colour scheme and I think the way the expansions look is ingenious, they really contrast well and give you a real sense of playing a new game despite being set in the same location. Overall, I would have to say I prefer Episodes to GTA IV.
