"WARNING: Excessive exposure to violent video games and other violent media has been linked to aggressive behavior."

GamePoitics.com

I know this is old, but it's back yet again. My opinion is that if playing a video game can turn you aggressive, there's something already not right upstairs.

No, violent video games have not been linked to aggressive behavior. People have been making these unfounded, uneducated claims ever since the media found out the Columbine kids played Doom. In the 50's, it was comic books, some shit I can't remember between then and the 90's, in the 90's, gangster rap and Marilyn Manson (again, thanks for fucking that up for us, Columbine), and now it's video games. None of these things cause violence, the world has spent thousands of years tearing itself apart, and rather than own up to their own fuck-ups, people find a scapegoat to blame for problems that have been around longer than the things that are catching all the blame.

Everyone has thought about hurting people, killing people, and anyone who denies it is full of shit. Everyone has the potential to commit violent acts, but most people don't do it. Some people give in to their natural disposition to violence, and blame something else when it happens. Every time something like this comes up in the news, I want to slaughter the people that make these accusations, not because video games made me violent, but because I hate them for making bullshit accusations against the only catharsis I have.

It's not video games, at least, not just video games. It's anything that isolates a person from human contact. TV, books, your phone, the internet - think back on your childhood. What percent was playing outside, with people your own age, and what percent was playing games, watching TV or surfing the internet? People have lost the ability to empathize. We simply don't care anymore, we have more important things to do. Does your suburb have a BBQ every month where your welcome to come along, bring some macaroni salad and get to know each other? Of course not. Chances are, most of you know more people online then you do in real life. I remember when people went to the club to drink and talk and try to get laid. The last bar I went to, half the people were staring at the plasma screen, and the rest were either staring into their iPhone or beer.

Do they really think that shooting pretend people is going to make you more likely to shout and break plates during arguments, or heaven forbid, actually imitate the games? These arguments have been repeated ad nauseum, but people can tell the difference between pretend violence and real violence, pretend violence wont make anyone less empathetic, and nobody is going to do anything violent based on video games alone, by blaming video games or Marlyn Manson we're ignoring the much bigger problems behind things like columbine: teen isolation, bullying, poverty etc.

I blame the lawyers in such cases, always trying their luck to create an excuse for their clients.

Right. But blaming games is older than Doom and Columbine. Violent games drew similar attention in the 80s when the graphics was so simple that it required fantasy of the player.

Games like Night Trap (which sucked, by the way) in the 80's caused a little bit of a stir, but Doom and Columbine was really the first time someone tried to tie video games to violence, before that, a discussion about violent video games was basically the same as parents saying "TV will rot your brain," and the most violent games in the 80's (as well as many featuring nudity) weren't even licensed, they were just some garbage some kid threw together on his computer. Nintendo put the early stages of anti-piracy software in place, and the unlicensed games slowly vanished from the market. Nobody took it seriously until some goth kids picked up some guns and said "this is just like Doom," forever fucking it up for the rest of us.

Go back to the time before video games were in every house. Remember when Dungeons and Dragons was branded as devil-worshipping, and everybody who did it just wanted to go out and get a sword and chop people in half? When I got the Basic D&D set (with my own paper route money, no less), my mother took it away because she heard on the news that I only bought it to worship the devil.

This crap just pisses me off. Makes me want to pull out my player's handbook, draw a pentagram, and call out satan's name while playing doom and listening to Manson playing backwards on my record player.

Ah D&D, that was our 70's controversy. Still blanking on 60's, but I assume it was just a continuation of the anti rock & roll from the 50's. Oh, and Kiss was 70's, too. Much more controversial than 50's/60's rock.

The 50s were more about "biker gangs" which were really misunderstood WW2 vets.

There has always been something.

A long time ago playing cards was controversial, and not only when money was involved. There has been countless of music related controversies, like new instruments, backwards rock, anything that was "new" has been more or less controversial.

The potato was "not pure", because everything that grew above the soil originated from God, everything that grew under the soil had to originate from Satan.

Mankind is making progress but it's slow going.... There's still these trolls, like Jack Thompson and other fanatics.

Weren't people worry about Elvis corrupting our youth in the 50s? Now he's easily the most important person in western culture.

The 50's was just a fucked time to live in if you wanted to do anything different than the rest of America. I still think people are dumber today, though. For example, Jersey Shore and all of its viewers.

Someone at a party asked me if I was Jersey Shore fan. I said I was only familiar with it because of people making fun of it. It really is the quintessential low brow reality show.

From what I've seen in commercials, it appears to be a nature program about a group of hookers living with a bunch of gorillas.
