Where GTA V *Won't* Be (San Andreas Fans Keep Out)

There are many discussions about what you want for the next Grand Theft Auto (GTA V, GTA 5, GTA next, etc) including the location. We even have a discussion about what you DON'T want for the next Grand Theft Auto. Similar to that, let's look at where it WON'T be. Obiously New York City is out (what a surprise that would be...) since it was just done and other places Rockstar has used in current games are likely out since they like to change things up and try something new with each one (take that as you will).

Here's a breakdown by game:

Red Dead Redemption

Red Dead Redemption took us out into the Southwestern United States. Seemingly endless deserts, large rock formations, and forests as well as mountains. What Grand Theft Auto Game had those? San Andreas. West of Las Venturas was a vast desert of tan dust and rocky cliffs as high as skyscrapers. Less chance of Las Venturas as a stand alone game. Forests and Mount Chiliad filled in the area South of San Fierro. Smaller chance of San Andreas being done.

L.A. Noire

I shouldn't need to explain that Los Santos was based on Los Angeles (L.A.) which L.A. Noire - Rockstar's upcoming detective thriller - is also based on. In addition to that, L.A. Noire is set in more modern times unlike Red Dead Redemption. So Los Santos as a stand alone city is definitely out. Another strike against San Andreas as the next location for Grand Theft Auto.

Midnight Club

Rockstar's infamous street racing game series has been in quite a few locations. Most recently the series blazed through Los Angeles. So again, Los Santos is out, and San Andreas takes another hit as the next Grand Theft Auto location.

Max Payne

Max Payne 3 is said to be in Sao Paulo, Brazil. The city itself is very large with a subtropical climate. Surrounding it is suburban areas and about 40 miles away is the Atlantic shore with beach resorts. Assuming Rockstar incorporates these places outside the urban (likely to give variety), it could be similar to Vice City. This game plus the Mexico portion of Red Dead Redemption pretty much drops a Spanish or similar language location for the next Grand Theft Auto too. We'll have to wait and see.

Agent's Location(s)

Another Rockstar Games title in the works. There is speculation about the location and the huge possibility there will be multiple places throughout the game. How in-depth each location will be is unknown but I would expect plenty of area to play with. Some rumors are pointing overseas which could mean Europe and even England. If that happens, don't look forward to another GTA London. Again, we'll have to wait and see.

So it's not looking good for San Andreas, especially as a whole. There's a chance Vice City may not see new light too. Other places are still on the table but I expect a place with more to offer than just tall buildings and suburbs like Liberty City. More to see and do. Obviously this is all speculation of my own opinion and no one except Rockstar Games knows where the next Grand Theft Auto will be. So until it is revealed keep hoping for your favorite!

OK I'll start - It won't be in Hawaii.

Or on Eater Island.

^ Why sad face?

Good article, TF.
I think it will be taking place in an English speaking country.

The United States has many more cities that could be interesting. Chicago? Dallas? Houston? Denver?

But no one has mentioned Canada. Vancouver, Toronto or some other Canadian cities are possible.

On the southern hemisphere we have South Africa (Cape Town or Johannesburg) and Australia (several large, well known cities).

I'm not sure, but I get the impression that you maybe count Brazil as a Spanish language country. They are Portoguese. Just saying.
